Chapter 6 - THE EXPLANATION MARK COULD NOT FINISH

Mark stared at Claire from across the street.
Traffic moved between them.
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Then he crossed quickly.
“Put the phone down.”
Vanessa remained near the car.
Claire continued recording.
“Tell me what treatment made you recover so completely.”
“I was having a good day.”
“You carried a suitcase into the clinic.”
“Physical therapy.”
“You laughed about me believing you.”
Mark’s eyes moved toward the documents in her hand.
“Did you sign the final loan papers?”
Claire understood his priority immediately.
Not the marriage.
Not the lie.
The loan.
“No.”
His face changed.
“Claire, the deadline is Monday.”
“There is no treatment.”
“There is. Vanessa can explain.”
Vanessa approached.
“Mrs. Bennett, your husband’s condition is complex.”
“Are you a neurologist?”
Vanessa’s mouth tightened.
“I coordinate multidisciplinary neurological care.”
“That wasn’t my question.”
Mark reached for Claire’s phone.
She stepped backward.
“If you touch me, the video uploads automatically.”
It was a bluff.
Mark believed it.
“You’re destroying our future,” he said.
Claire laughed once, without humor.
“Our future?”
Vanessa opened the passenger door.
“We should leave.”
Claire held up the handwritten card.
“Is she your little star?”
Vanessa stopped.
Mark’s silence answered.
Then Claire saw a second phone inside the vehicle.
Its screen displayed a document titled:
BENNETT PROPERTY ACQUISITION—FINAL CLOSING.
She moved closer.
Mark slammed the door.
“You have no idea what you’re looking at.”
“I know my last name.”
Detective Morales arrived before Mark could drive away.
Rachel had sent officers after viewing the live evidence Claire forwarded.
Morales instructed Mark and Vanessa to remain while investigators secured the clinic’s digital records.
Vanessa protested that patient confidentiality prevented any search.
Morales held up the warrant request.
“Fraud is not medical care.”
Claire watched Mark’s confidence begin to collapse.
Then her phone rang.
It was Eleanor.

“Claire,” she whispered. “Someone is inside the house.”
👉 While Claire confronted Mark at the clinic, another person was searching the home for the original trust documents.
