Chapter 13 - THE DOCTOR WHO NEVER TREATED HIM

Northgate’s former receptionist, Jasmine Lee, agreed to testify.
She had suspected something was wrong for months.
Mark never entered examination rooms.
He met Vanessa inside her private office.
His “infusion appointments” were blocks of time when the clinic was closed to ordinary patients.
On one occasion, Jasmine opened the office door and found Mark and Vanessa drinking champagne.
Mark’s cane rested against a chair.
A wheelchair used in a photograph was stored nearby.
Vanessa ordered Jasmine to tell Claire the treatment had been difficult.
“I asked why we were lying,” Jasmine said.
“She told me wealthy families needed emotional encouragement to make medical decisions.”
Jasmine also witnessed Vanessa create fake scans.
The images belonged to an unrelated patient.
Names and dates were replaced.
Northgate billed Claire for procedures performed on someone else.
The state medical board suspended Vanessa’s license pending criminal proceedings.
Her attorney argued that Mark invented the symptoms and deceived her.
Jasmine produced messages proving the opposite.
Vanessa coached Mark before every episode.
Tonight: right-hand tremor.
Tomorrow: confusion after breakfast.
Use the stairs only if Eleanor is present.
One message read:
Make Claire feel guilty for questioning you. Caregivers fear being called selfish.
Claire had to leave the room after hearing it.
Every fall.
Every frightened whisper.
Every night she checked Mark’s breathing.
Scripted.
Eleanor followed her into the hallway.
“You can stop listening.”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because I need to know where his performance ended.”
Eleanor took her hand.
“It ended the moment you saw him walk out of that clinic.”
Claire breathed slowly.
“You don’t need to relive every scene to prove it was false.”
Prosecutors charged Vanessa with medical fraud, conspiracy, identity theft, attempted property theft, evidence fabrication, and offenses connected to the other victims.
Mark faced the same conspiracy charges, plus spousal financial abuse and forgery.

But the most serious charge depended on what investigators found inside the private lender’s foreclosure files.
👉 The foreclosure records showed Mark and Vanessa had already chosen a buyer for Claire’s home before she ever signed the loan.
