Chapter 11 - MARK’S VERSION OF LOVE
Mark requested a private meeting with Claire.
Rachel and Morales attended.
He wore the same navy blazer from the clinic.
Without the staged weakness, he seemed younger.
Stranger.
“I never meant for you to lose the house,” he began.
Claire said nothing.
“Vanessa controlled the lender.”
“You owned forty percent.”
“She handled operations.”
“You reviewed victims’ property.”
“I was trying to recover money I lost through Adrian.”
Claire looked at him.
“You helped take Adrian’s home.”
“He betrayed me in business.”
“So you punished his wife?”
Mark’s composure broke.
“You don’t understand what it’s like to watch everyone else inherit security while you work for scraps.”
Claire almost laughed.
“My father built that house while working nights.”
“And then handed it to you.”
“He died before I was thirty.”
Mark lowered his voice.
“I loved you.”
“Did you fake illness because you loved me?”
“I panicked after Vanessa said the development plan could make us rich.”
“Us?”
Mark hesitated.
That single pause revealed the truth.
He and Vanessa planned a future together.
Claire was merely the bridge between them and the land.
Mark tried another approach.
“I knew you would be taken care of.”
“After foreclosure?”
“You could have lived with Eleanor somewhere smaller.”
“You planned our poverty as a reasonable cost.”
Mark began crying.
He said Vanessa threatened to expose his earlier involvement.
He said the fake illness became impossible to stop once Claire paid the first invoice.
He claimed every lie required another.
Claire listened until he finished.
Then she placed his voice memo on the table.
Claire will mortgage the house before she lets me die.
“You did not become trapped in the lie,” she said. “You designed it around who you thought I was.”
Mark asked whether she would support a reduced sentence if he cooperated.
Claire stood.
“I spent six months protecting your life.”
She looked at the healthy man before her.

👉 Mark’s apology collapsed when Claire refused to rescue him, and Vanessa responded by releasing a forged video intended to make Claire look like the criminal.
