Chapter 4 - ELEANOR’S MEDICINE
Eleanor asked to see Mark’s prescriptions.
He refused.
“Medical privacy still exists inside a family.”
Later, Claire found three amber bottles in his briefcase.
The labels listed unfamiliar neurological drugs.
Eleanor examined the pills from a distance.
“Those tablets look like my old migraine medication.”
“That doesn’t mean anything,” Claire said.
“The manufacturer stopped making that shape two years ago.”
They searched Eleanor’s medicine cabinet.
A sealed box of discontinued tablets was missing.
Mark had offered to dispose of them weeks earlier.
Claire photographed the remaining packaging and compared the lot number with the pills inside his briefcase.
They matched.
Someone had removed Eleanor’s old tablets and placed them in bottles carrying fake Northgate labels.
Claire felt the first true crack in Mark’s story.
That evening, she asked how the medication affected him.
“It causes nausea,” he answered.
“What color are the pills?”
He stared at her.
“White.”
They were blue.
Mark recovered quickly.
“They changed the prescription last week.”
Claire called Northgate.
The receptionist refused to confirm medication information.
Vanessa returned the call personally.
“Mark’s cognitive decline may cause him to confuse details,” she said. “Please don’t interrogate him.”
“I’m his wife.”
“Then protect him from unnecessary stress.”
When Claire ended the call, Eleanor was standing behind her.
“She was protecting the lie, not the patient.”
Claire wanted to disagree.
Instead, she placed the medicine photographs inside a password-protected folder.
The next morning, Mark suggested that Eleanor move into assisted living.
“She’s creating conflict,” he said.
“She lives here.”
“She’s also interfering in my treatment.”
“It’s her house too.”
Mark’s expression tightened.
“Not after the refinance. The trust will have to be restructured.”
Claire looked at him carefully.
“No one said anything about changing the trust.”
Mark smiled too late.
“I must have misunderstood the lender.”
That night, Claire checked the preliminary loan packet again.
