Chapter 1 - THE HEALTHY MAN OUTSIDE THE CLINIC
Claire Bennett stood behind a parked SUV across from Northgate Neurology Center, holding her phone with both hands so Mark would not see it shaking.
For six months, her husband had struggled to cross their living room without support.
He claimed bright light caused unbearable pain.
He forgot names.
Dropped glasses.
Woke screaming that his arms had gone numb.
Now he walked through the clinic’s glass doors with an easy, confident stride.
No cane.
No dizziness.
No pain.
Dr. Vanessa Cole followed him outside in an expensive white coat. She smiled, brushed imaginary dust from his navy blazer, and rested her hand against his chest.
“Your wife still believes it?” Vanessa asked.
Mark laughed.
“Claire believes anything I say.”
The words struck harder than any diagnosis.
Claire covered her mouth, but she kept recording.
Inside her bag were the documents Mark had pressured her to sign.
A $120,000 treatment invoice.
Preliminary papers for a home-equity loan against the house Claire inherited from her father.
Photographs of relabeled medicine bottles Mark pretended to take.
And a handwritten card she found beneath his laptop:
My little star, after Monday, the house is finally ours.
Claire had never been his little star.
Vanessa was.
Mark opened the passenger door for her.
Claire stepped from behind the SUV.
“How sick are you now, Mark?”
His smile vanished.
Vanessa pulled her hand away.
Claire held up the loan papers and the phone still recording.
“You made me mortgage my father’s house for a lie.”
Mark looked toward the clinic entrance as though searching for help.
“You don’t understand.”
“I understand you can walk.”
Her attorney, Rachel Donovan, received the video seconds later.
Rachel opened the pending loan file and called financial-crimes investigator Luis Morales.
“Freeze the loan,” she said. “And get me a warrant before they erase anything.”
Across the street, Mark realized Claire had not come to rescue him.
