Chapter 14 - The Brother Behind the Apartment Door

Cara’s younger brother, Ethan, was nineteen.

He lived with her while attending community college.

The threat call earlier had proven Lorenzo’s people knew where to find him.

Agent Brooks had already sent officers to the apartment.

They arrived minutes before two men approached the building.

The men wore utility uniforms and carried forged service orders.

Police detained them near the stairs.

One carried zip ties.

The other carried a photograph of Cara and Ethan.

Ethan was moved to a secure location.

Cara learned he was safe only after Dominic’s video appearance ended.

Her knees nearly gave out.

She sat beside the wall.

For hours, she had controlled every movement and every word.

Now the fear reached her all at once.

“I should have walked away,” she whispered.

Sofia sat beside her.

“No.”

“My brother almost paid for what I did.”

“What you did was hear a heartbeat.”

“And challenge people who could reach my family.”

Sofia looked through the glass at Dominic.

“My father built a world where threats like that became normal. Saving him does not make you responsible for the world he created.”

Cara looked at her.

“Do you forgive him?”

“No.”

The answer surprised her.

“I love him. I want him alive. I also want him to answer for what he did.”

Cara understood.

Compassion did not require blindness.

Agent Brooks confirmed that Lorenzo had been arrested at the private club.

Anthony Greco was captured in the hospital parking garage while trying to leave in a paramedic vehicle.

Administrator Merrick, Dr. Hale, Marco, Owen, and the respiratory therapist were all in custody.

The conspiracy had collapsed.

But Dominic remained critically ill.

The poison could take hours to clear.

His heart had been deprived of oxygen more than once.

No one knew what damage remained.

Cara stayed beside him until sunrise.

At 6:14 a.m., Dominic opened his eyes and followed her finger.

At 7:02, he squeezed Sofia’s hand on command.

At 8:30, the team removed the ventilator.

Dominic breathed independently.

His first words were not about Lorenzo.

“Your brother?”

Cara nodded.

“Safe.”

Dominic closed his eyes with relief.

Then he said, “My fault.”

Cara answered carefully.

“Your choices created enemies. Their choices made them criminals. Both things can be true.”

Dominic looked at her.

No one in his organization spoke to him that way.

Perhaps that was why he listened.

👉 Dominic had survived the coup, but the next decision would determine whether Cara had saved a man—or merely restored a more powerful criminal.
