Chapter 10 - The Criminal Who Planned to Confess

Dominic asked Cara, Sofia, and Vincent to remain in the room.

He had hidden the truth from his daughter because he knew she would try to stop him.

The black drive contained complete records.

Illegal shipping routes.

Bribed officials.

Money-laundering accounts.

Names of men responsible for violence carried out under the Russo name.

Some crimes belonged to Lorenzo.

Others belonged to Dominic.

“I gave orders,” Dominic said. “I told myself I was keeping worse men under control.”

Sofia’s eyes filled.

“You said you were changing everything.”

“I was.”

“Without telling me you were going to prison?”

“I did not want your future built from my escape.”

Dominic had reached an agreement with Agent Brooks.

If he surrendered the evidence and dismantled the remaining network, prosecutors would protect lower-level employees who had committed no violent crimes.

Legal businesses would remain open under independent oversight.

Victims would receive restitution.

Dominic would plead guilty to racketeering and financial offenses.

He expected a long sentence.

Lorenzo discovered part of the agreement.

He believed killing Dominic before the signature meeting would destroy the cooperation deal.

Then Lorenzo could claim the legal businesses, eliminate witnesses, and reopen every criminal route Dominic had closed.

Sofia stood from the chair.

“You were going to leave me with the consequences.”

“I was going to leave you with a clean company.”

“You were going to leave me.”

Dominic’s face tightened.

“I have left you alone every time I chose power over honesty. Prison is only the first time I’m admitting it.”

Cara looked away, giving them privacy.

Sofia wiped her eyes.

“You don’t get forgiveness because you finally chose the right thing.”

“I know.”

“But I’m not letting Lorenzo kill you to avoid the consequences.”

Dominic almost smiled.

“That sounds like my daughter.”

Vincent contacted Agent Brooks through the number in the envelope.

She answered immediately.

“I’m inside the building.”

Everyone turned toward the door.

A woman in a hospital housekeeping uniform entered carrying a linen cart.

She removed her cap.

Agent Renee Brooks had been watching the hospital since Dominic arrived.

She had seen Hale declare him dead.

But her undercover team had been ordered not to reveal itself until they identified the full conspiracy.

Cara stared at her.

“You knew they might try to kill him here?”

“We knew Lorenzo had contacts. We did not know Hale was one of them.”

Cara’s anger rose.

“You used the hospital as a trap.”

Brooks accepted the accusation.

“And you prevented that trap from becoming a murder.”

She connected the black drive to an encrypted tablet.

Most files opened.

One folder required Dominic’s live voice authorization.

He needed to survive long enough to speak a full sentence.

Then the hospital fire alarms began sounding.

Smoke appeared beneath the observation-wing door.

👉 Lorenzo could not reach Dominic through doctors or guards, so he began forcing the entire floor to evacuate.
