Chapter 11 - The Fire Behind the Locked Door

The smoke did not come from an accidental fire.
Someone had ignited a supply cart inside the ventilation corridor.
Hospital protocol required immediate evacuation.
Lorenzo’s men were waiting for Dominic to be moved into the open.
Cara refused to place him in the main hallway.
“The smoke is artificial,” Brooks said after checking the vent. “They want movement.”
The backup ventilation system could keep the room safe for several minutes.
Vincent contacted the fire department directly.
Hospital administrator Merrick ordered staff to open every secure door.
Agent Brooks overruled him under federal authority.
Merrick finally lost control.
“You cannot take over my hospital.”
Brooks looked at him.
“You allowed an attempted murder inside it.”
Merrick insisted he knew nothing.
Cara mentioned the death certificate and medication deletion.
His face hardened.
“I will not be questioned by a rookie nurse.”
Dominic’s breathing worsened.
Cara adjusted his oxygen.
Then she noticed the IV bag had become cloudy.
It had been clear minutes earlier.
Someone had injected something through the external port.
Only one staff member had entered since the transfer.
A respiratory therapist named Colin.
Security found him near the stairwell.
He confessed before reaching the interview room.
Merrick had paid him.
The administrator promised to protect his license and erase his gambling debt.
Brooks ordered Merrick detained.
He tried to leave through the fire evacuation crowd.
Two agents stopped him.
The fire department extinguished the supply-cart blaze.
Lorenzo’s men never gained access to the observation wing.
But the contaminated IV had entered Dominic’s bloodstream.
His heart rate dropped again.
Cara removed the line and called for the antidote.
The toxicologist warned that Dominic might not survive another collapse.
Dominic’s eyes closed.
The monitor slowed.
Sofia gripped his hand.
“Dad.”
Cara began emergency treatment.
Hale shouted from security custody across the hall.
“You’re giving the wrong medication!”
Cara ignored him.
He continued.
“The first drug wasn’t alone. There was a second agent in the wine.”
Cara looked toward the toxicologist.
The available tests had not identified it.
Hale smiled through the glass.
“If you want him alive, you need me.”
Vincent wanted to force the answer from him.
Brooks stopped him.
Cara walked to the security door.
“What did you give him?”
Hale leaned closer.
“Release me.”
“No.”
“Then watch your patient die correctly this time.”
Cara studied him.
His arrogance had become stronger than his caution.
She activated the recorder on her badge.
“Why did you declare him dead while he still had a heartbeat?”
Hale answered before realizing the trap.
May you like
“Because Lorenzo paid for a death, not another surgery.”
👉 Hale had finally confessed to the first betrayal—but Dominic’s fading pulse gave Cara only minutes to uncover the second drug.
