Chapter 9 - THE TRUST CREATED IN SECRET
The new household trust contained twenty-seven pages.
Richard recognized none of them.
Victoria’s attorney had created it using clauses copied from legitimate Ashford documents.
The forged agreement stated that Richard’s future spouse could manage education, medical care, residences, and discretionary expenses for all three boys.
It also allowed her to borrow against a family investment account created for them by Caroline.
The account held nearly eighty million dollars.
Victoria could not withdraw the principal directly.
But she could approve “educational and residential investments.”
Hawthorne Alpine Academy charged less than one hundred thousand dollars per child.
The trust allocated twelve million dollars for an affiliated European residence and “specialized family support services.”
The affiliated company was controlled by Victoria’s brother.
Richard read the documents in silence.
“She planned to move twelve million dollars through a fake school arrangement.”
The family attorney nodded.
“And once the children were living abroad, she would control communication with outside trustees.”
Emily sat at the far end of the table.
Ethan had told her Victoria frequently opened his mail.
Now they knew why.
Caroline’s original children’s trust required independent interviews with each son every year after the oldest turned eleven.
Ethan’s eleventh birthday was six weeks away.
If he reported coercion, unexplained travel, or fear inside the home, the independent trustee could suspend adult access to the account.
Victoria needed him outside the country before the interview.
She also needed Emily gone.
Emily was the only adult Ethan trusted enough to tell everything.
Richard lowered his head.
“I gave Victoria access to the family office.”
“You gave her limited access,” the attorney said. “Other people helped her exceed it.”
The investigation identified two employees who approved forged signatures without confirming them.
One admitted Victoria paid him.
The other claimed he followed verbal instructions from Richard’s chief financial officer.
The conspiracy reached beyond the mansion.
Police searched Victoria’s apartment.
They found duplicate jewelry tags, including the one attached to Richard’s Rolex.
They also found passports for the boys, sedative medication prescribed under false names, and a schedule for the airport departure.
Emily stared at the medication list.
Noah was dangerously allergic to one of the ingredients.
Victoria had copied outdated medical information from an old household file.
If she had given him the drug during the flight, he might have stopped breathing.
Richard stood so abruptly that the chair fell behind him.
“She could have killed him.”
Emily’s voice remained quiet.
“She never learned who they were. She only learned how to control them.”
The criminal investigation expanded to include child endangerment, fraud, attempted theft, forgery, and evidence tampering.
But Victoria still insisted Richard approved everything verbally.
To prove otherwise, investigators needed someone who heard the conversations between Victoria and her attorney.
