Chapter 7 - CAROLINE’S VOICE
Richard inserted the flash drive into the security-room computer.
Emily remained near the doorway with the boys.
She had agreed to stay only until the police completed their initial interviews.
Victoria sat across the room with an officer beside her.
The first video opened.
Caroline Ashford appeared on screen.
She wore a head scarf. Her face was thin from cancer treatment, but her voice remained steady.
“If Richard is watching this, then I did not have enough time to finish what I started.”
Richard gripped the edge of the desk.
The video had been recorded three weeks before Caroline died.
She explained that financial irregularities had been discovered inside her children’s foundation.
Scholarship money had been moved into consulting accounts.
Invoices were created for services never provided.
The financial director responsible for approving those payments was Victoria Sloan.
Victoria stood.
“This is absurd. Caroline was heavily medicated.”
The officer ordered her to sit.
Caroline continued.
“I confronted Victoria. She claimed the transfers were accounting errors. When I requested an independent audit, several records disappeared.”
Richard looked at Victoria.
“You told me you resigned because Caroline became unreasonable during treatment.”
“She was paranoid.”
The next file contained emails.
Victoria had moved more than $900,000 from the foundation.
When Caroline threatened to report her, Victoria promised to return the funds.
Instead, she began telling donors that Caroline’s illness was affecting her judgment.
Richard had never known.
Caroline kept the investigation private because she feared a public scandal would damage the foundation and frighten the boys.
The final video was addressed to Ethan.
“My brave boy, there may come a time when adults stop listening because the truth is uncomfortable. Keep this safe. Give it to the person who makes you feel protected without asking you to become silent.”
Ethan began crying.
“I wanted to give it to you, Dad.”
Richard turned toward him.
“Why didn’t you?”
“Victoria said Mom was confused before she died. You said Victoria was helping us.”
Richard closed his eyes.
He had repeated Victoria’s version without knowing it.
Emily knelt beside Ethan.
“You did exactly what your mother asked.”
Marcus opened a folder from the flash drive.
It contained a list of scholarship recipients whose payments had been delayed because of Victoria’s theft.
Emily Carter’s name appeared on the third page.
Emily stared at it.
Years earlier, she had received partial funding from the Caroline Ashford Children’s Foundation to study pediatric nursing.
The scholarship disappeared after one semester.
Emily had been told the program ran out of money.
She left school to care for her dying mother.
Victoria looked from Emily’s name to Caroline’s video.
