Chapter 11 - THE APOLOGY HE COULD NOT BUY
Richard called a press conference outside Ashford Global headquarters.
His advisers opposed it.
They wanted a short statement blaming unauthorized employees.
Richard refused.
Emily watched from the guest cottage with the boys.
Richard stepped before the cameras.
“Yesterday, I falsely accused Emily Carter, a member of my household staff, of theft.”
Reporters began shouting questions.
He continued.
“The accusation was based on evidence planted by my former fiancée, Victoria Sloan. I acted without investigation and ordered Ms. Carter from my home in front of my children.”
He paused.
“My grief, anger, and position do not excuse what I did.”
Richard explained that Emily had protected his sons for eighteen months.
He acknowledged that they ran after her because they trusted her more than they trusted him in that moment.
The admission spread across every news network.
Then Richard announced an independent audit of Ashford Global, the family office, and the Caroline Ashford Children’s Foundation.
He asked former scholarship recipients to come forward.
Emily’s name was cleared publicly.
But an apology did not return the dignity taken from her in the mansion hall.
After the press conference, Richard came to the cottage.
He did not enter.
He knocked.
Emily opened the door halfway.
“I’m not here to ask you to return to work,” he said.
“Good.”
“I owe you back pay, damages, and legal support.”
“My attorney will discuss that with yours.”
Richard nodded.
“I also restored your scholarship.”
Emily’s expression hardened.
“You don’t get to turn what happened into charity.”
“It isn’t charity. The foundation stole from you.”
“Then repay every student, not only the one standing in front of you.”
Richard looked at her for a long moment.
“You’re right.”
The audit eventually identified forty-seven scholarship recipients whose funding had been diverted.
Some left school.
Some accumulated debt.
One became homeless during training.
Richard created a restitution fund overseen by an independent board.
Emily accepted only the amount originally owed to her, adjusted for interest.
She refused a private bonus.
That evening, Ethan asked whether Emily would ever live in the house again.
“I don’t know.”
“Because Dad yelled at you?”
“Because adults have to rebuild trust too.”
“Do you still love us?”
Emily knelt.
“Nothing that happened changed that.”
Ethan handed her Caroline’s wooden horse.
“I think Mom would want you to have this.”
Emily closed his fingers around it.
“Your mother left it for you.”
“She left the video for whoever kept us safe.”
Emily’s eyes filled with tears.
Before she could answer, Marcus called from the security room.
He had recovered deleted footage from the night Caroline entered the hospital for the final time.
Victoria had been inside Caroline’s study.
She removed more than financial records.
