Chapter 2 - THE TICKETS IN THE NURSERY

Richard ordered the gates closed.
Victoria turned toward the hallway.
“Open them,” she told the nearest guard. “I live here.”
Marcus stepped in front of her.
“Mr. Ashford gave the order.”
Victoria looked at Richard.
“You’re locking me inside because a maid told your children a story?”
“Emily hasn’t told me anything.”
Richard held up his phone.
“The camera did.”
Two police vehicles stopped outside the estate.
Emily immediately tightened her arms around the boys.
She expected Richard to accuse her again.
Instead, he spoke quietly.
“Emily, please bring them inside. They’re barefoot.”
She stared at him.
Minutes earlier, he had called her a thief in front of the entire staff.
“You told me never to come back.”
“I was wrong.”
“That doesn’t make the street disappear.”
Ethan looked between them.
“Please, Miss Emily.”
Emily could not leave the children trembling outside.
She took their hands and walked through the gates, but she did not look at Richard.
Inside, officers separated everyone.
Marcus brought the full security recording from an independent backup server. Victoria had disabled the cameras in Emily’s corridor, but she did not know Marcus had installed a temporary unit after several unexplained system failures.
The video showed Victoria entering Emily’s room at 4:12 p.m.
At 4:16, she removed a folder from the nursery cabinet.
At 4:21, she told the boys to pack only one toy each.
Richard’s eyes narrowed.
“What was in the folder?”
A police officer searched the nursery with Richard’s permission.
Behind a row of picture books, she found three airline tickets.
Richard Ashford’s sons were booked on a flight leaving the following morning.
Destination: Zurich.
The tickets were one-way.
Attached were enrollment confirmations for Hawthorne Alpine Academy, an isolated international boarding school.
Richard stared at his electronic signature.
“I never approved this.”
Victoria folded her arms.
“We discussed boarding school.”
“We discussed visiting one next year.”
“The boys need discipline.”
Liam began crying again.
Victoria looked at him with irritation.
“This is exactly what I mean.”
Emily pulled him closer.
The officer continued examining the documents.
Each enrollment form included medical authorization giving Victoria Sloan permission to make emergency decisions for the children.
Richard had supposedly signed those too.
He had not.
Victoria’s attorney had notarized them.
Richard looked at his fiancée.
“You forged my name.”
“I protected our future.”
“Our future?”
Victoria glanced toward Emily.
“Not in front of the staff.”
Emily stood.
“I’m not staff anymore. You made sure of that.”
Ethan tugged gently on her glove.
“There’s something else.”
He led the police toward his toy chest.
Beneath a wooden train set was a black flash drive.
“Mom told me to hide it before she went to the hospital,” he said. “She said I should only give it to someone who made us feel safe.”
Richard went still.
His wife Caroline had died two years earlier.
He had never known about the drive.
“Why didn’t you give it to me?” he asked.
Ethan looked down.
May you like
“Because after Mom died, you stopped listening.”
👉 The flash drive had been hidden since Caroline’s death—and Victoria’s name appeared in the very first file.
