Chapter 1 - THE BOYS WHO CHOSE HER

“Stay away from my sons!”

Richard Ashford’s voice thundered across the quiet street.

Emily Carter stopped outside the iron gates of the billionaire’s mansion.

She was still wearing her red housekeeping dress and yellow cleaning gloves. Tears ran down her face as she pulled a black suitcase through a shallow puddle.

Behind her, Richard charged past his luxury car, his black suit jacket open and his face burning with anger.

But his three sons were faster.

Ten-year-old Ethan ran barefoot through the gates. Seven-year-old Liam followed, crying so hard he could barely breathe. Five-year-old Noah stumbled after them with his blue pajama shirt covered in grass and dirt.

“Miss Emily, don’t leave!”

Ethan wrapped both arms around Emily’s hand.

Liam clung to her waist.

Noah hid behind her skirt.

Emily dropped the suitcase and knelt in the road, placing herself between the boys and their father.

“Boys, you have to go inside.”

“No!” Ethan cried. “She said she was sending us away!”

Richard stopped.

“Who said that?”

None of the children moved toward him.

They pressed closer to Emily.

That hurt Richard more than he was prepared to admit.

Only fifteen minutes earlier, he had accused Emily of stealing his late wife’s Rolex. The watch had been found inside Emily’s suitcase.

Richard had not called the police.

He had not asked questions.

He had ordered her out.

Now Ethan opened his fist.

The missing Rolex lay in his palm.

A small paper tag remained caught beneath the clasp.

VICTORIA—JEWELRY INVENTORY.

Emily stared at it.

“Ethan, where did you get this?”

“From your suitcase,” he whispered. “I saw Victoria put it there.”

Richard’s face lost color.

A security camera above the gate blinked.

His phone vibrated.

A message from Marcus, the estate’s head of security, appeared.

SIR, YOU NEED TO SEE THE FULL RECORDING.

Richard opened the attached video.

Victoria Sloan entered Emily’s room carrying the Rolex.

She unzipped Emily’s suitcase.

She placed the watch beneath a folded sweater.

Then she walked into the nursery and told the boys, “Once Emily is gone, the three of you are leaving too.”

Richard watched the video twice.

Behind him, the mansion door opened.

Victoria appeared beneath the stone archway, wearing a cream dress and holding Richard’s engagement ring against her finger.

She saw the phone in his hand.

Then she saw Ethan holding the watch.

Her confident smile vanished.

“She’s manipulating them,” Victoria said. “Richard, don’t let that woman turn your children against us.”

Noah peeked around Emily’s arm.

“She said we were going away tomorrow.”

Richard slowly turned toward Victoria.

“Going where?”

Victoria did not answer.

Police sirens sounded in the distance.

Emily rose, keeping all three boys behind her.

Richard looked at the suitcase he had thrown into the street.

Then he looked at the woman he had humiliated without allowing her to defend herself.

“What did you do?” he asked Victoria.

Victoria stepped backward into the mansion.

And for the first time, Richard realized the stolen watch had never been the real plan.

👉 Victoria framed Emily to remove her from the house—but the boys’ mysterious departure was scheduled to happen less than twenty-four hours later.
