Chapter 10 - THE BOY UNDER THE DESK
Liam often hid when adults argued.
No one knew he had crawled beneath Victoria’s library desk two weeks earlier.
He had been searching for a small wooden horse Caroline once kept on the shelf.
Victoria entered with attorney Charles Wynn.
Liam became frightened and stayed silent.
He heard Victoria complain that Richard was delaying the wedding.
Wynn said the trust could not activate until the marriage license was filed.
“The boys leave first,” Victoria replied. “Once they’re abroad, Richard will be too ashamed to admit he didn’t authorize it.”
“What about the housekeeper?”
“Richard will remove her if he thinks she stole from Caroline.”
Wynn asked what item Victoria planned to use.
“The Rolex. It carries enough emotion that he won’t think clearly.”
Liam covered his mouth while repeating the words to investigators.
Emily sat beside him.
No adult interrupted.
No one suggested he had misunderstood.
That alone seemed to make him stronger.
Liam also heard Victoria discuss sedating the boys during the flight.
Wynn warned her that forged prescriptions created unnecessary risk.
Victoria replied, “They cry too much. I need them quiet.”
Richard left the interview room.
Emily found him in the hallway.
He pressed both hands against the wall.
“I was going to marry her.”
Emily did not comfort him.
His grief did not erase his responsibility.
“You accused me because the watch belonged to Caroline,” she said. “Victoria knew exactly how to use your pain.”
“I should have checked.”
“You should have listened.”
Richard nodded.
There was nothing else he could say.
Wynn was arrested later that day.
His office contained drafts of the forged trust, school documents, and a plan to challenge Richard’s competence if he discovered the fraud.
Victoria had prepared medical declarations describing Richard as emotionally impaired by grief.
She intended to control him the same way she controlled the boys.
Richard had believed wealth made him difficult to manipulate.
Victoria used that belief against him.
She surrounded him with employees who obeyed quickly and questioned nothing.
Emily had been the only person in the house willing to say no.
That was why Victoria needed her gone.
The district attorney offered Victoria a chance to cooperate against Wynn and the family-office employees.
She refused.
She believed Richard would avoid a public trial to protect the Ashford name.
Her attorney delivered a proposal.
Victoria would return part of the money and reveal the remaining accounts if Richard issued a statement calling the watch incident a misunderstanding.
Emily read the proposed statement.
It still described her as “an emotionally overinvolved domestic employee.”
Victoria wanted freedom.
She also wanted Emily to remain beneath her.
Richard tore the statement in half.
