Chapter 6 - THE DOOR THAT LOCKED FROM OUTSIDE
Raymond took Ava’s phone.
He claimed the family needed a “technology break.”
Then he removed the battery from her laptop and disabled the home Wi-Fi.
“You’re grounding me three weeks before I become an adult?”
“You won’t be functioning as an adult for a long time.”
Marissa stood in the hallway.
“You should cooperate until things calm down.”
Ava looked at her.
“Things don’t calm down. I just get quieter.”
Marissa flinched.
Raymond locked Ava’s bedroom from the outside that night.
He called it a safety precaution.
Ava called it what it was.
Captivity.
She still had the pendant.
Its emergency connection used a separate cellular signal.
At 2:00 a.m., she activated it and whispered her location.
The upload failed.
Raymond had installed a signal jammer near the upstairs hallway.
He had prepared for devices he could not find.
The next morning, he unlocked the door and ordered Ava downstairs.
A psychiatrist named Dr. Nolan Pierce waited in the living room.
He was the same man whose name appeared on the false capacity report.
“I understand you’ve been experiencing paranoia,” he said.
“I understand you signed a report without meeting me.”
His smile weakened.
Raymond sat beside Marissa.
Dr. Pierce opened a notebook.
“Your mother reports significant emotional changes.”
“My mother reports whatever Raymond tells her.”
Marissa began crying.
Ava continued.
“Did you know he plans to use your report to keep control of my trust?”
Dr. Pierce glanced at Raymond.
“This interview is becoming unproductive.”
“It never became an interview.”
Raymond stood.
Ava pressed the pendant.
“Sit down,” he ordered.
“No.”
He stepped toward her.
Dr. Pierce lifted one hand.
“I should leave.”
Raymond blocked him.
“You were paid to complete an evaluation.”
“I was paid to review records.”
“Then complete it.”
The recorder captured every word.
Dr. Pierce looked frightened now.
“I cannot recommend guardianship after this interaction.”
Raymond’s jaw tightened.
“You already signed the preliminary opinion.”
“It was based on the history your wife provided.”
Marissa stared at him.
“You said he had evaluated Ava through school records.”
Raymond ignored her.
Dr. Pierce gathered his papers.
“I am withdrawing my opinion.”
Raymond followed him toward the door.
Ava heard the argument in the foyer.
She used the distraction to remove the signal jammer’s power cord.
Her pendant immediately uploaded both recordings.
Rebecca received them.
She contacted CPS and requested emergency intervention.
But Raymond called the agency first.
He reported that Ava had become violent, threatened self-harm, and was attempting to run away with confidential company information.
Marissa confirmed his story.
By the time the caseworker arrived, Raymond had already placed a broken picture frame on Ava’s floor and said she had smashed it during an episode.
Ava denied everything.
The caseworker saw no active injury requiring removal.
Raymond remained calm.
Marissa remained tearful.
Ava sounded angry.
The pattern worked exactly as Raymond intended.
After the caseworker left, Raymond closed the front door.
Then he turned toward Ava.
“You keep trying to bring strangers into my house.”
“It’s Lily’s—” No, wrong story. Need fix. Let's continue correctly.
“You keep trying to bring strangers into this house,” he said.
Ava looked at him.
“It was my father’s house.”
Raymond smiled coldly.
“Not for much longer.”
