Chapter 5 - THE FIRST RECORDING

The first important recording happened at breakfast.
Raymond placed a bottle of pills beside Ava’s plate.
“What are those?”
“Something to help with your anxiety.”
“I don’t have anxiety medication.”
“You do now.”
“Which doctor prescribed it?”
“Your mother arranged a private consultation.”
Ava looked at Marissa.
Her mother stirred coffee without raising her eyes.
“Mom?”
“You haven’t been sleeping.”
“That doesn’t mean I need pills from a doctor I’ve never met.”
Raymond sat across from her.
“This resistance is exactly what the court petition describes.”
Ava pressed the side of the pendant twice beneath the table.
The green light blinked.
“What petition?” Marissa asked too quickly.
Raymond looked at her.
“The temporary protection petition.”
“You said she wouldn’t see that.”
Ava stopped breathing.
Marissa realized what she had admitted.
Raymond’s chair scraped against the floor.
“Where did you find it?”
Ava stood.
“I didn’t say I found anything.”
He grabbed her wrist.
The recorder captured the sound.
“You went through my office.”
“Let go.”
“Tell me what you copied.”
“Nothing.”
Raymond tightened his grip.
Marissa whispered, “Raymond, not at the table.”
Not Don’t hurt her.
Not Let go of my daughter.
Only not here.
Raymond released Ava.
“You will take the medication.”
“No.”
“If a doctor documents that you refuse treatment, it supports the petition.”
“The doctor has never seen me.”
“He has reviewed your history.”
“What history?”
Marissa began crying.
Raymond answered.
“The history your mother provided.”
Ava looked at her.
“You told a stranger I was unstable?”
“I told him you were struggling.”
“You told him what Raymond wanted.”
“I’m trying to keep this family together.”
Ava’s voice broke.
“By helping him take my father’s company?”
Raymond stood.
“Your father left a burden, not a company.”
He stepped closer.
“I saved Bennett Home Systems.”
“You stole from it.”
His face changed.
The pendant captured the silence before he responded.
“You have no idea what I had to move to keep that company alive.”
“Northline?”
Marissa looked toward him.
“What is Northline?”
Raymond turned back to Ava.
“You mention that name again, and your eighteenth birthday will happen inside a treatment center.”
Ava held his gaze.
The pendant continued recording.
For the first time, she possessed his threat exactly as he had spoken it.
That evening, she uploaded the file to Rebecca.
The reply came within minutes.
This is enough to begin emergency action. Leave tonight.
Ava packed a small bag.
Before she could reach the stairs, she heard Raymond lock the front door.
