Chapter 1 - THE GIRL WHO SAID NO
Raymond Cole carried seventeen-year-old Ava Bennett into the emergency room as though he were rescuing her.
Her clothes were soaked.
Dark bruises covered her arms, shoulders, and legs. Water dripped from her hair onto the white hospital floor.
Her eyes remained closed.
Marissa, Ava’s mother, hurried beside them with both hands pressed against her mouth.
“She slipped in the bath,” Marissa told the doctor.
Dr. Helen Park blocked the examination-room entrance.
Her eyes moved over Ava’s body.
Some bruises were purple and fresh.
Others were yellowing.
Several appeared in places a simple fall would not explain.
“How long was she unconscious?” Dr. Park asked.
“Maybe a minute,” Raymond said. “She’s dramatic about pain.”
Ava’s eyes opened slightly.
Fear moved across her face the moment she heard his voice.
Raymond placed her on the hospital bed.
He remained near the door, smiling at the nurses as though he were a worried father.
Marissa stood beside him, twisting a tissue between her fingers.
She looked directly at Ava.
The warning in her eyes was unmistakable.
Say what we practiced.
Dr. Park closed the curtain.
She lowered herself until she was level with Ava’s face.
“Did you slip?”
Ava’s lips trembled.
She looked toward her mother.
Marissa gave the smallest nod.
Ava then looked at Raymond.
He folded his arms.
For months, he had told her what would happen if she spoke.
No one would believe a difficult teenager.
She would lose her home.
Her mother would go to prison.
Her late father’s company would collapse.
Ava’s shaking fingers moved beneath the hospital gown.
She pulled out a thin silver necklace.
A tiny green light blinked inside the pendant.
Recording.
Raymond’s smile vanished.
Ava closed her hand around it.
“No,” she whispered.
Dr. Park stood immediately.
She stepped into the hallway and picked up the emergency phone.
“Police and CPS. Emergency Room Three.”
A nurse closed the curtain around Ava.
Another nurse carefully placed Ava’s wet clothing and shoes into evidence bags.
Raymond moved toward the bed.
“I need to speak to my daughter.”
A hospital security officer blocked him.
“She is not your daughter,” Ava said.
The words were quiet.
But everyone heard them.
Two police officers appeared at the end of the hallway.
Raymond stared at the green light on the necklace.
“What is that?”
Dr. Park held out her palm.
Ava placed the pendant in it.
The doctor pressed the playback button.
Raymond’s voice came through the tiny speaker.
You tell that doctor you slipped, or you’ll lose everything your father left you.
Marissa staggered backward.
Raymond’s face turned white.
The recording continued.
A crash.
Ava crying.
Then Raymond said something that changed the entire investigation.
Three more weeks, and the judge will believe you’re too unstable to control the company.
