Chapter 14 - ETHAN’S LAST BOARD MEETING
The video had been recorded during Ethan’s final board meeting.
Ava was eleven at the time.
She remembered waiting outside the conference room with colored pencils while adults discussed documents she did not understand.
In the recording, Ethan sat at the head of the table.
Cancer had weakened his body.
His voice remained steady.
“My daughter will inherit voting control at eighteen,” he told the directors.
One executive asked whether eighteen was too young.
Ethan smiled.
“Too young for what? To own what already belongs to her?”
“To guide a company this size.”
“She does not have to run it. She has to choose people who remember why it exists.”
He instructed the board not to treat Ava’s age as permission to control her.
He warned that future guardians, spouses, or executives might describe their own ambition as protection.
“If anyone attempts to use her health, education, grief, or family loyalty to take these shares,” Ethan said, “the board’s duty is to stand beside her, not above her.”
Several current directors had attended that meeting.
They had later allowed Raymond to dominate them.
Watching Ethan’s message forced them to face their failure.
One board member resigned.
Two others admitted they had ignored warning signs because Raymond produced strong quarterly numbers.

“For two more days.”
The board meeting took place inside the same room where Ethan had recorded the message.
Raymond appeared by video from jail.
His attorneys insisted he remained chief executive until a formal vote removed him.
Ava entered wearing a simple navy dress.
She carried no dramatic folder.
Arthur Wells sat beside her as temporary fiduciary.
Employee representatives filled the back row.
Raymond looked at Ava through the screen.
“You are being manipulated by your aunt.”

The forensic auditor presented the stolen payments.

Then Ethan’s video played.
Raymond’s face changed when he heard the protection clause explained in Ethan’s own words.
The board voted unanimously to remove Raymond.
Northline contracts were canceled.
His shares and assets were frozen for restitution.
An interim executive with no family connection took control.
Ava used her protected vote to create an employee oversight committee and authorize full cooperation with prosecutors.
Raymond leaned toward the camera.
“You think your father prepared you for this?”
Ava looked directly at him.
“He prepared the company for someone like you.”
The connection ended.
The room remained quiet.
Then the factory supervisor who had worked with Ethan since the first year stood.
“Your father would be proud.”
Ava shook her head gently.
“He would want us to fix the alarms Raymond sold before he wanted anyone to praise me.”
The employees began working that afternoon.
A product recall was issued voluntarily.
No defect would be hidden to protect the company’s reputation.
Two days later, Ava turned eighteen.
Her voting shares transferred fully.
