Raymond’s criminal trial began seven months later.
Ava had turned eighteen.
The scar near her shoulder had faded.
The fear in her body had not disappeared as quickly.
When Raymond entered the courtroom, her hands became cold.
Rebecca noticed.
“You can leave.”
“No.”
“You have already given recorded testimony.”
“I want him to hear me when he cannot interrupt.”

“You accessed confidential company files.”
“I photographed evidence that he stole twenty-three million dollars.”
“You considered yourself capable of judging complex finances at seventeen?”
“I considered an empty warehouse incapable of performing eleven million dollars in consulting work.”
Several jurors looked toward Raymond.
His attorney changed direction.
“You sometimes became angry with your mother?”
“Yes.”
“You shouted?”
“Yes.”
“You attempted to leave the house against parental instructions?”
“Yes.”
“Doesn’t that support concerns about your behavior?”
Ava looked at him.
“Teenagers get angry. That does not give adults permission to drug, confine, injure, or steal from them.”
The courtroom became silent.
Dr. Park testified next.
She described the injury patterns.
The sedative.
The fear response.
The hospital protocol that allowed Ava to answer without Raymond or Marissa speaking for her.
Dr. Pierce admitted falsifying the capacity report.
Ridgeway administrators testified about the planned confinement.
Financial experts traced the stolen money.
Then Marissa took the stand.
Raymond stared at her.
She admitted everything.
The lies to doctors.
The false school reports.
The medication in Ava’s tea.
The signatures.
The silence.
Raymond’s attorney suggested she acted alone.
Marissa looked at Raymond.
“No. I helped him. But he designed it.”
The prosecutor played Raymond’s voicemail to Ridgeway.
Do not let the mother change her mind.
His attempt to use Marissa’s weakness against Ava now supported both women’s testimony.
Raymond chose to testify.
He called himself a father trying to save a troubled family and a failing company.
