Chapter 8 - THE MAN WHO LOOKED AWAY
Martin Cole requested immunity before agreeing to speak.
For twelve years, he had managed the finances of Vale Women’s Health Network.
He had worked beside Claire.
He had attended Madison’s high school graduation.
He had sent flowers after Claire died.
Yet he had stood beside Derek in Room 417 and watched Madison bleed.
Detective Grant questioned him with Samantha present as Madison’s legal representative.
Martin began with excuses.
Derek controlled his salary.
Derek knew about his gambling debts.
Derek threatened to blame him for the missing money.
Samantha stopped him.
“Why did you support Derek’s version of Madison’s injury?”
Martin looked at the table.
“Because I was afraid.”
“Madison was bleeding.”
“I know.”
“You left her there.”
His eyes filled with tears.
“I know.”
Martin admitted Meridian Surgical Solutions was secretly controlled by Derek through two holding companies.
The company purchased rejected medical supplies at extremely low prices.
Some products were relabeled.
Others were imported without proper testing.
Vale clinics paid full market prices.
Derek kept the difference.
“How much?” Detective Grant asked.
“Nearly thirty-one million dollars.”
Martin helped create false invoices.
He also moved money into offshore accounts.
Claire discovered the irregularities when physicians reported defective seals and inconsistent medication concentrations.
She demanded an immediate recall.
Derek refused because a recall would expose Meridian’s ownership.
“What happened before Claire’s procedure?” Samantha asked.
Martin covered his face.
A Meridian shipment had included mislabeled medication.
Naomi ordered the supply quarantined.
Derek overrode the order.
He told pharmacy staff the concern had been resolved.
Claire’s procedure used a vial from that shipment.
“Did Derek know it was unsafe?”
“Yes.”
“Did he intentionally select the vial for Claire?”
Martin hesitated.
“I don’t know.”
Samantha leaned forward.
“You are asking prosecutors to protect you. This is the moment to stop hiding.”
Martin whispered, “Derek went into the medication room before her procedure.”
The access log had later been deleted.
But Martin saw him leave.
Derek told him Claire would “stop causing problems after today.”
Martin assumed Derek meant she would be removed from the board.
Then Claire almost died on the operating table.
Afterward, Derek ordered Martin to erase the Meridian payment trail and cancel Naomi’s independent testing.
“Why didn’t you report him?”
“Because he said the police would charge me too.”
“They may still.”
“I know.”
Martin provided passwords to offshore accounts and a list of employees who had been instructed to falsify records.
He also revealed Derek had begun selling Robert’s voting decisions through forged electronic proxies after the stroke.
Robert had never authorized Derek to control his shares indefinitely.
The network was not merely being mismanaged.
It had been stolen from its incapacitated chairman.
But Martin’s confession still could not prove whether Derek deliberately arranged Claire’s death.
For that, investigators needed the medication sample Naomi had hidden in Room 417.
When police returned with a warrant, the refrigeration cabinet was empty.
Someone had entered after the preservation order.
The access system showed no name.
Only a master override code.
A code assigned to Robert Vale.
Robert had been unable to walk for nine months.
