Chapter 1 - CHOOSE HOW YOU PAY

Madison Pierce was still wearing a pale blue examination gown when her stepbrother forced his way into the clinic.

She had twelve fresh stitches along her lower abdomen.

Her hands were shaking.

Her body hurt every time she breathed.

Derek Vale slammed the examination-room door behind him and pointed down at her.

“Choose how you pay.”

Madison backed against the metal examination table.

The thin gown tightened beneath her fingers as she tried to cover herself.

“Get out.”

“You can sign the voting proxy,” Derek said, “or the police can learn you stole prescription drugs from this clinic.”

Madison stared at him.

“I didn’t steal anything.”

“That has never stopped people from believing a well-documented story.”

The same cold smile had appeared on his face the night before, moments before he shoved her into the broken edge of a glass cabinet.

Madison’s knees weakened.

She sank to the floor, one arm wrapped around her stitched wound.

Derek stepped closer.

“You tell anyone what happened at the house, and you lose the trust, your reputation, and whatever is left of your mother’s name.”

The door opened behind him.

Dr. Naomi Rhodes stood in the hallway holding Madison’s medical chart.

Nurse Nina Patel was beside her.

Two police officers rushed forward.

Derek spun around.

“This is a private family matter.”

Officer Grant seized his arm.

Derek jerked away and tried to move toward Madison again.

“Tell them you fell.”

Madison pressed her back against the base of the examination table.

For years, Derek had trained her to become quiet whenever his voice changed.

He had convinced her that resistance would only make things worse.

But something had changed when Dr. Rhodes finished stitching the wound.

The doctor had looked Madison in the eyes and said, “What happened to you was not an accident.”

Derek struggled against the officers.

“Choose, Madison!”

She lifted her face.

Tears moved down her cheeks, but her voice was clear.

“No.”

Dr. Rhodes stepped between them.

“I saw everything.”

Derek glanced toward the corner of the hallway.

A security camera blinked red above the door.

At the front desk, another officer replayed the footage on a tablet.

It showed Derek pushing past the receptionist, shouting Madison’s name, and forcing his way toward the examination room.

Beside the tablet rested Madison’s medical file.

Photographs documented the fresh laceration, older bruises on her arm, and finger-shaped marks around her wrist.

Officer Grant pulled Derek’s hands behind his back.

“Put him in cuffs.”

Derek’s confidence finally disappeared.

“She’s lying!”

Madison remained on the floor while Dr. Rhodes knelt beside her and Nina placed a warm blanket around her shoulders.

As the officers dragged Derek toward the door, a folded document slipped from his coat.

Dr. Rhodes picked it up.

At the top was the name of a medical supplier.

Meridian Surgical Solutions.

The doctor went completely still.

Madison noticed.

“What is it?”

Naomi closed the document before Derek could see her reaction.

“Your mother brought me a file with that same name three days before she died.”
