Smoke filled the legal archive two floors below the boardroom.
Sprinklers activated.
Staff evacuated through the stairwells.
Samantha immediately checked the secure evidence room.
The door had been forced.
A fire had started inside a storage cabinet containing copied Meridian records.
But Finch’s original report was not there.
Samantha had placed it inside a federal evidence vault the night before.
The burned boxes contained marked duplicates.
The building’s security cameras captured a maintenance contractor entering with forged credentials.
Police arrested him in the parking garage.
He worked for Adrian Cross.
The contractor’s phone contained instructions to destroy “all Claire material” and photograph the empty shelves afterward.
Adrian planned to convince Derek that the evidence was gone.
Instead, the messages gave prosecutors direct proof of obstruction.
Federal agents located Adrian at a private airfield.
He had cash, false identification, and a ticket to leave the country.
He was arrested before boarding.
With both men in custody, the Meridian operation collapsed quickly.
Warehouse managers cooperated.
Brokers surrendered shipping records.
Former Vale employees described Derek’s pressure to ignore safety complaints.
Families of harmed patients came forward.
Madison met several of them inside a community hall.
A mother named Teresa held a photograph of her daughter, who had died after receiving mislabeled medication at a rural hospital.
“My daughter was twenty-six,” Teresa said. “The hospital told us it was an unpredictable reaction.”
Madison’s throat tightened.
“That is what they told me about my mother.”
The two women held hands.
For Madison, Claire’s death had always been a private wound inside a wealthy family.
Now she saw its true scale.
Derek’s scheme had reached strangers who never knew the Vale name.
Patients trusted a label.
Doctors trusted a supplier.
Families trusted institutions designed to protect them.
Derek turned that trust into money.
Madison established an emergency restitution fund using frozen Meridian assets and the portion of Derek’s shares recoverable through civil court.
The fund would pay for long-term treatment, funeral costs, independent case reviews, and legal assistance.
Robert voluntarily contributed half of his personal holdings.
“I cannot repair Claire,” he told Madison through his tablet. “But I can stop profiting from what failed her.”
Madison approved an independent review of every Vale patient treated with Meridian products.
No case would be hidden to protect the network’s reputation.
The truth would be expensive.
She chose it anyway.
Meanwhile, Derek’s criminal case expanded.
Prosecutors charged him with Claire’s murder, conspiracy, racketeering, healthcare fraud, assault, witness intimidation, and obstruction.
His attorneys offered a plea to avoid the murder trial.
The prosecutor rejected it.
Claire deserved a public record of what had been done.
