Chapter 3 - HER MOTHER’S LAST FILE

Madison waited until she returned to her apartment before opening the flash drive.
It contained dozens of scanned invoices.
Most were from Meridian Surgical Solutions.
The company had supplied disposable instruments, sterile kits, and medication to Vale clinics during the final year of Claire’s life.
The invoices looked ordinary at first.
Then Madison noticed the quantities.
One small clinic had supposedly purchased twelve thousand surgical kits in a single month.
Another had paid for medication that its pharmacy records never received.
Millions of dollars had left the network.
The files also included emails between Claire and Martin Cole.
Claire had questioned the Meridian contracts.
Martin answered that Derek personally approved them.
A later message from Claire read:
Suspend all Meridian products until independent testing is complete. We have reports of damaged seals and incorrect labeling.
Derek’s response appeared beneath it.
No suspension. Your concerns are creating unnecessary panic.
The next email was dated six days before Claire died.
Derek, if you refuse to notify the board, I will. Patients may already have been harmed.
There was no reply.
Madison read the messages twice.
Claire had undergone a procedure at Vale’s flagship surgical center three days later.
She developed catastrophic complications shortly afterward.
Derek told the family it was an unpredictable medical reaction.
The hospital’s internal review found no wrongdoing.
Dr. Rhodes, who had treated Claire, resigned two months later.
Madison had never been told why.
The flash drive contained one audio file.
Claire’s voice filled the apartment.
“Madison, if you are hearing this, I probably waited too long to tell you the truth.”
Madison covered her mouth.
Her mother sounded tired but calm.
“I found payments connected to Derek. I do not know whether Robert understands what his son is doing. Do not confront Derek alone.”
The recording crackled.
“There is a second copy of the testing report. Naomi knows where—”
The audio stopped.
Madison tried opening it again.
The file was corrupted.
She called Dr. Rhodes.
Naomi answered after the fourth ring.
“Madison?”
“I found my mother’s Meridian files.”
Silence followed.
“Where are you?”
“At home.”
“Lock the door.”
Madison stood.
“Why?”
“Because Claire told Derek she had made copies. He searched her office after she died.”
“How do you know?”
“I saw him.”
A sound came from the hallway outside Madison’s apartment.
A shoe scraped against the floor.
Naomi lowered her voice.
“Do not open the door.”
The handle slowly turned.
Madison had locked it.
Someone knocked.
“Madison,” Derek called. “We need to talk.”
She held the phone against her chest.
Naomi whispered, “Call the police.”
Derek knocked again.
Then he spoke through the door.
“I know what Mom left you.”
Claire was not Derek’s mother.
He only called her that when he wanted to sound like a grieving son.
Madison looked at the flash drive.
“What do you want?”
“The chance to explain.”
“Explain why you ignored a safety warning?”
The hallway became silent.
Then Derek said, “Open the door before you make this much worse.”

👉 Madison finally understood that Derek was not afraid of losing a board vote—he was afraid of what Claire had discovered before her final procedure.
