Chapter 16 - ROBERT’S RECORDING
Robert had recorded the message before his stroke.
Claire had asked him to document a conversation with Derek in case the board needed proof of misconduct.
Robert forgot the recording existed after his medical emergency.
A rehabilitation technician found it inside an encrypted folder on his old tablet.
The judge allowed prosecutors to play it after verifying its date.
Robert’s younger, stronger voice filled the courtroom.
“Derek, Claire says Meridian products may be dangerous.”
Derek answered.
“She is exaggerating.”
“She showed me the invoices.”
“You always let her turn you against me.”
“I am ordering an outside audit.”
A chair scraped.
Then Derek’s voice became colder.
“If you choose her over me, you lose your son.”
Robert replied, “This is not about choosing.”
“It always is.”
The recording continued.
Derek accused Claire and Madison of stealing his place in the family.
He said Robert had built a company that should belong to his biological son.
Robert reminded him that Claire saved the network during its earliest financial crisis and earned every share she owned.
Derek laughed.
“When she is gone, Madison will be too frightened to challenge anything.”
Robert’s recorded voice changed.
“What does that mean?”
“It means you raised her to depend on stronger people.”
The conversation ended when Claire entered the room.
Three weeks later, Claire died.
Six months later, Robert suffered his stroke.
Investigators found no evidence Derek caused Robert’s medical emergency.
But the recording revealed motive.
Derek did not see Madison as a sister.
He saw her as an intruder who inherited the recognition he believed belonged to him.
He assumed Claire’s death would leave Madison weak.
He assumed Robert’s disability would leave the company unguarded.
He assumed fear could become a permanent form of ownership.
The jury deliberated for four days.
Madison waited with Naomi, Samantha, Robert, and several affected families.
When the verdict was announced, she held Robert’s hand.
Derek was found guilty on every major charge.
Murder.
Healthcare fraud.
Racketeering.
Conspiracy.
Assault.
Witness intimidation.
Obstruction.
The judge described his conduct as “a calculated betrayal of patients, family, and public trust.”
Derek received life in prison for Claire’s murder, along with additional sentences for the wider scheme.
Adrian Cross was later convicted and sentenced to decades in federal prison.
Martin and Lauren received reduced sentences because of their cooperation, but neither escaped accountability.
Both were ordered to testify in civil cases and surrender assets gained through the fraud.
After sentencing, Derek turned toward Madison.
“You took my family.”
Madison looked at Robert.
Then at Naomi.
Then at the families filling the courtroom.
“No,” she said. “You treated people like things you owned. They finally left.”
Officers led him away.
He did not look powerful.
He looked exactly like what he was.
A man facing the consequences he had spent years forcing onto others.
