Chapter 13 - THE BOARDROOM ACCUSATION
The emergency board hearing began at nine in the morning.
Madison entered slowly because her stitches still pulled when she walked.
Naomi sat beside her.
Samantha arranged the evidence in sealed binders.
Robert attended through a video connection from his rehabilitation center.
Derek appeared on another screen from county jail.
Even in a detention uniform, he tried to control the room.
“This hearing is a staged takeover,” he began.
The board chair ordered him to wait.
Derek continued.
“Madison stole patient files, manipulated an impaired man, and persuaded frightened employees to invent stories.”
Madison did not react.
Derek had relied on reactions his entire life.
Anger became instability.
Tears became weakness.
Silence became guilt.
This time, she gave him nothing.
His attorney presented a document supposedly signed by Claire six months before her death.
It amended the trust and delayed Madison’s voting rights until age thirty.
The document also granted Derek permanent operational control.
Several board members exchanged concerned looks.
Samantha examined the signature.
“It is forged.”
Derek laughed through the screen.
“You say everything is forged when it inconveniences you.”
Samantha displayed Claire’s verified trust documents.
The amendment used a digital signature certificate created two weeks after Claire died.
Derek’s attorney stopped speaking.
The forensic report traced the certificate to Lauren’s office computer.
Lauren had already confessed that Derek ordered her to create it.
The board chair turned toward Derek’s screen.
“Did you submit a document signed by a deceased woman?”
Derek leaned forward.
“My father wanted continuity.”
Robert struck his communication tablet.
A synthesized voice spoke for him.
I DID NOT AUTHORIZE THIS.
The boardroom fell silent.
Samantha then presented Martin’s testimony, the offshore accounts, the Meridian ownership records, the privacy breach, and footage of Derek carrying the insulated pouch toward Room 417.
Naomi described Claire’s medical complications.
Evelyn Marsh explained the quarantine order.
Finally, the clinic footage played.
Derek entered the examination hallway.
He shoved past reception.
His voice filled the boardroom.
Choose how you pay.
Madison’s answer followed.
No.
The board watched officers pull him away from a wounded woman while he shouted that she was lying.
Derek’s screen remained visible throughout.
For the first time, he had to watch other people witness what he looked like when he believed no consequences existed.
The board voted unanimously.
Derek was removed from every position.
His shares were frozen pending civil recovery proceedings.
Robert’s proxy transferred to an independent fiduciary.
Madison’s inheritance was confirmed.
But Madison did not accept the chief executive role.
“I am not a doctor, and I will not replace one form of family control with another.”
She nominated Naomi as interim clinical president and an outside healthcare administrator as chief executive.
The board approved both appointments.
Derek stared at Madison.
“You think this makes you Mom?”
“No,” she said. “It makes me the person who finally believed her.”
Federal agents were waiting to transport Derek after the hearing.
Before the connection ended, he made one final threat.
“You have no idea what Adrian Cross will do when he realizes you have the report.”
At that exact moment, the fire alarm sounded inside the building where Samantha had stored Finch’s evidence.
