Chapter 8 - THE FILE MARKED CLAIRE
Dr. Grant played the recording twice.
The second time, Margaret did not cry.
She listened to every pause.
Every tremor in Claire’s voice.
Every word Daniel had believed would die with her.
“You changed my medication,” Claire said.
Daniel’s recorded answer followed.
“Yes.”
Outside the office, the real Daniel shouted that the file was fabricated.
Police held him against the hallway wall.
Elise attempted to leave through the clinic’s rear exit.
Nurse Kelly recognized her and blocked the door until another officer arrived.
Dr. Grant opened the remaining files.
Claire had recorded a separate message for Margaret.
“Mom, I need you to know that I was not confused.”
Margaret pressed both hands against the desk.
“I changed my will with Samantha Price. Daniel gets no control of Pierce Medical. The shares go to the foundation, and you are the executor.”
Daniel heard Claire’s voice through the office door.
He stopped struggling.
Claire continued.
“If he says I made mistakes with my pills, he is lying. If he cremates me quickly, it is because he knows what independent testing will find.”
Dr. Grant showed Margaret the preserved blood sample.
He had drawn it during Claire’s last appointment.
A second hospital had agreed to test it under sealed forensic conditions.
The preliminary results showed medication inconsistent with Claire’s prescribed treatment.
One level was far above the expected range.
Another medication she depended upon was nearly absent.
Someone had not merely changed the pills.
They had replaced the balance keeping her condition stable.
Margaret looked at the cremation authorization.
“Can we prove this signature was forged?”
Dr. Grant opened the portal data.
The form was submitted from Daniel’s home computer.
Claire’s verified phone was disconnected at the time.
The digital certificate came from a copy used on earlier corporate documents.
Samantha arrived with Claire’s revised will.
It had been signed while Claire was independently evaluated and fully competent.
Daniel’s probate petition relied on an older document.
More importantly, he had sworn that no later will existed.
That statement was now evidence of probate fraud.
The medical examiner ordered an immediate criminal review.
The probate hearing was suspended.
Pierce Medical’s board froze Daniel’s access.
Officers searched his vehicle.
Inside the trunk, they found Claire’s missing laptop wrapped in a blanket.
The hard drive had been partially wiped.
Federal technicians recovered a folder titled:
AFTER CLAIRE
It contained a draft announcement naming Daniel chief executive.
A marriage license application carrying Elise’s information.
And a schedule for selling Pierce Medical’s diagnostic patents to Alder Ridge.
Elise had not only helped Daniel control Claire’s medication.
She expected to replace her.
