Chapter 10 - THE HOUSEKEEPER’S BOX
Rosa Alvarez had worked in Claire’s home for seven years.
After Claire died, Daniel dismissed her without notice.
He accused her of stealing jewelry.
Rosa disappeared before police could question her.
Daniel’s attorneys suggested that Rosa had taken the bedroom recorder and altered it for money.
Margaret did not believe that.
Rosa had delivered the box of photographs containing the first recording module.
She had tried to protect Claire.
Samantha traced her to her sister’s apartment in New Jersey.
Rosa opened the door only after hearing Margaret’s voice.
“I’m not here to blame you,” Margaret said.
Rosa began crying.
“I left her there.”
“So did I.”
“No. You didn’t know.”
Rosa invited them inside.
She had hidden because Daniel threatened to report her adult son for an immigration violation based on false employment documents.
He also planted Claire’s earrings in Rosa’s cleaning bag.
Rosa feared arrest.
On the final night, Rosa heard Claire arguing with Daniel.
She approached the bedroom.
The door was locked.
Through the narrow gap beneath it, she saw Elise’s shoes and Daniel’s shadow.
Claire said she would expose them.
Daniel answered that no one would believe a sick woman over her husband.
Later, Elise left the room carrying the silver medication box.
Daniel remained inside.
Rosa heard Claire vomiting.
She begged Daniel to call an ambulance.
He told her Claire was having an anxiety attack.
At 1:30 a.m., Rosa found Claire barely conscious.
Daniel ordered her out.
“He said if I touched the phone, my son would lose everything.”
“Did Claire speak?” Margaret asked.
Rosa nodded.
“She said, ‘My mother has the truth.’”
Rosa secretly called Dr. Grant’s clinic from the kitchen phone.
The call went to voicemail.
She left no message because Daniel entered the room.
He took her phone.
The next morning, after Claire was taken away, Rosa found the broken pendant module under the bed and placed it in Margaret’s photograph box.
She also found one of Claire’s pills beside the dresser.
Rosa wrapped it in tissue.
Then Daniel fired her before she could deliver it.
The pill remained hidden in a sewing tin at her sister’s apartment.
Forensic testing showed it did not match Claire’s pharmacy prescription.
Its composition matched one of the substances detected in Dr. Grant’s preserved blood sample.
The physical evidence now connected the swapped pill to Claire’s final days.
Rosa agreed to testify.
Before Margaret left, Rosa handed her a sealed envelope.
“Claire gave me this a week before she died.”
Inside was a handwritten letter.
Claire had written:
If Daniel claims my mother pressured me to change my will, ask why he arranged my cremation before I signed it.
A date appeared beneath the sentence.
It was the date Daniel purchased the cremation package.
Three days before Claire revised her estate.
He had planned for her death before he knew she had removed him.
