Chapter 6 - THE LAST APPOINTMENT

Claire arrived at Dr. Grant’s clinic pale and unsteady.

Daniel claimed she had fainted after forgetting breakfast.

Dr. Grant ordered him and Elise to remain outside.

Daniel refused.

“This is my wife.”

“And she is my patient.”

Clinic security escorted him into the waiting area.

Alone with the doctor, Claire began crying.

“He changed them again.”

“The medication?”

She nodded.

Dr. Grant examined her wrist.

The X-ray showed a fracture.

“That did not come from fainting.”

“He grabbed me.”

“Claire, I need to report this.”

“If you report it before I leave the house, he’ll move the money and destroy the server.”

“This is not about money anymore.”

“It’s evidence for hundreds of employees and patients. He used company accounts to buy unapproved devices through Elise’s family.”

Dr. Grant lowered his voice.

“You may not survive another dose.”

Claire looked toward the closed door.

“I signed a new will.”

“That will not protect you while you are alive.”

“No. But it protects my mother if I don’t get out.”

He wanted to admit her to the hospital.

Claire refused until she could retrieve one final file from Daniel’s home computer.

Dr. Grant documented the fracture, bruises, medication irregularities, and Claire’s statement.

He also drew blood and stored a sample for independent testing.

Before Claire left, he gave her a small USB recorder.

“Press once to begin. Hold for three seconds to send an emergency alert.”

Claire slipped it into the pocket of her cardigan.

In the hallway, Daniel was furious.

“You embarrassed me.”

“I told the truth.”

“You told a doctor a story.”

“He saw the X-ray.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

Elise stepped between them with a practiced smile.

“Claire is tired.”

They returned home.

That night, Claire copied Daniel’s laptop.

The files showed payments to Alder Ridge.

They also showed Daniel had purchased an accelerated cremation package under Claire’s name.

The form was dated three weeks before her death.

Claire was still alive when her husband arranged to destroy her body.

Her hands began shaking.

She inserted Dr. Grant’s USB recorder.

“Mom,” she whispered, “Daniel scheduled my cremation before I died.”

A floorboard creaked behind her.

Daniel stood in the doorway.

Claire quickly minimized the documents.

“What are you doing?”

“Writing a letter.”

“To whom?”

“My mother.”

Daniel crossed the room.

“Let me see.”

“No.”

He reached for the laptop.

Claire pulled it away.

Elise entered carrying the silver pill organizer.

Daniel locked the bedroom door.

“You have one more chance to stop fighting us.”

Claire pressed the recorder inside her pocket.

“You changed my medication.”

Daniel answered quietly.

“Yes.”

Claire’s breath caught.

Elise stared at him.

Daniel continued.

“And if you had simply signed the company authorization, none of this would have been necessary.”

The USB device recorded the confession.

Then Claire held the emergency button.

A tiny light flashed.

The file began uploading to Dr. Grant’s secure system.
