Chapter 13 - THE SECOND REPLACEMENT
The woman was named Victoria Lane.
She worked for an investment group interested in purchasing Pierce Medical.
Daniel began communicating with her three months before Claire died.
Their messages were personal.
He promised Victoria a future after he gained control of the company.
He described Elise as “useful but unstable.”
In one message, Victoria asked whether Elise knew too much.
Daniel replied:
After probate, she becomes the medical explanation if anyone asks questions.
Elise read the words inside the interrogation room.
Her face hardened.
“He said we were doing this together.”
The detective did not respond.
“He said Claire was cruel to him.”
“He told Victoria you altered Claire’s pills without his knowledge.”
Elise stared at the table.
Daniel had planned to blame her from the beginning.
His version would be simple.
An unlicensed care coordinator became obsessed with him and harmed his wife.
Daniel, the grieving husband, discovered the truth too late.
Elise asked for a lawyer.
Then she began negotiating.
She admitted she swapped Claire’s medication under Daniel’s direction.
She admitted she used Daniel’s access to alter the patient portal and forge medical authority.
She admitted they created records portraying Claire as cognitively impaired.
“Did you intend to kill her?” the prosecutor asked.
Elise closed her eyes.
“Daniel said the changes would make her weak enough to sign.”
“That was not the question.”
Elise began crying.
“The final night, he told me to increase what we were giving her.”
“Did you know it could be fatal?”
“Yes.”
“Did you do it?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“He said Claire had sent evidence away. He said if she woke up clear-headed, we would both go to prison.”
Elise described the bedroom.
Daniel held Claire down when she resisted.
Elise administered the final medication.
Claire remained conscious long enough to say Margaret already had proof.
Daniel searched the room but did not find the USB recorder.
He delayed calling an ambulance for more than two hours.
“Was Claire breathing when help arrived?”
“Yes.”
“Did Daniel instruct you to say she had taken the medication herself?”
“Yes.”
Elise agreed to testify in exchange for prosecutors considering her cooperation at sentencing.
She did not receive immunity.
Her admission made her a participant in murder.
The prosecutor charged both Daniel and Elise.
Margaret watched their arraignment from the second row.
Daniel turned toward Elise.
“You liar.”
Elise laughed bitterly.
“You were going to bury me next.”
Daniel looked toward Margaret.
For the first time, he appeared afraid of her.
Not because Margaret had wealth or influence.
Because she now carried every truth Claire had fought to preserve.
As officers led him away, he shouted:
“Claire wanted to die!”
Margaret stood.
“My daughter recorded herself begging you to stop.”
The courtroom became silent.
Daniel’s accusation died before it reached the door.
