Chapter 5 - THE RECORDING IN THE BEDROOM

Claire activated the pendant two nights later.

She was sitting at her bedroom vanity when Daniel entered carrying the silver pill organizer.

Elise followed him.

Claire looked at the pills.

“These aren’t what Dr. Grant prescribed.”

Daniel placed the box beside her.

“Your dosage changed.”

“He told me it didn’t.”

“You misunderstand medical language.”

Elise poured a glass of water.

“Take them.”

Claire did not touch the box.

“I want the pharmacy containers.”

“They were discarded,” Elise said.

“Why?”

“Because normal people don’t keep empty bottles.”

Claire looked at Daniel.

“Did you access my patient portal?”

His expression remained calm.

“I manage your care.”

“You forged my authorization.”

“You gave me authority years ago.”

“I revoked it.”

Daniel moved closer.

“Because your mother is filling your head with suspicions.”

“My mother doesn’t know about the company.”

That answer interested him.

“What company issue?”

Claire realized she had revealed too much.

Elise stepped behind her.

“You should take the medication.”

“No.”

Daniel’s hand closed around Claire’s wrist.

She gasped.

“Let go.”

“You are making yourself sick.”

“You are making me sick.”

For the first time, his smile disappeared.

He leaned close.

“You have no idea how difficult you’ve made this.”

Claire’s pendant recorded every word.

Elise placed two pills in her palm.

“Take them, and tomorrow will be easier.”

Claire swept the pills onto the floor.

Daniel shoved her backward.

Her wrist struck the edge of the vanity.

Pain shot through her arm.

“You’ll regret that,” he said.

Claire looked at the scattered pills.

“No. You will.”

Daniel’s eyes moved toward the pendant.

Claire covered it instinctively.

He ripped the chain from her neck.

The recorder fell beneath the bed.

Daniel examined the pendant casing but did not notice the tiny memory module had separated on impact.

He dropped the broken chain into the trash.

“You need rest.”

Elise gave Claire an injection from an emergency kit.

Claire tried to pull away.

Her body became heavy.

The room blurred.

Before losing consciousness, she saw Elise collecting the pills from the carpet.

The memory module remained beneath the bed.

The following morning, Claire woke with swelling around her wrist.

Daniel said she had fallen during a confused episode.

Elise agreed.

Dr. Grant was told Claire refused medical care.

Two days later, the housekeeper found the tiny recording module while cleaning.

Claire saw it in the woman’s hand.

She pressed one finger to her lips.

The housekeeper understood.

She hid it inside a box of old photographs scheduled to be delivered to Margaret.
