Chapter 6 - THE MESSAGE CLARA NEVER SENT
Clara typed a message to Victoria that night.
I think I made a terrible mistake.
She stared at the words for almost a minute.
Then Dominic entered the bedroom.
Clara locked her phone.
He smiled and kissed her forehead.
“Who are you texting?”
“Elena.”
Dominic held out his hand.
“Let me see.”
“It was private.”
“We don’t keep secrets.”
Clara deleted the message before giving him the phone.
He searched it anyway.
The next morning, her passcode no longer worked.
Dominic claimed the device had updated overnight.
He gave her a replacement phone already connected to his family account.
Clara understood the warning.
From that day forward, she began hiding information in ordinary places.
She wrote dates inside cookbooks.
She photographed bruises using an old tablet kept in the nursery.
She saved copies of financial documents inside a cloud folder labeled BABY SHOWER IDEAS.
At seven months pregnant, she discovered a series of payments from Dominic’s development company to five local officers, including Officer Grant.
The payments were disguised as private security fees.
Several occurred on dates when those officers were officially on duty.
Another payment went to Chief Pike two days after Thomas Hale’s accident report was amended.
Clara did not know whether it proved murder.
It proved corruption.
She scheduled the entire folder to be emailed to Victoria if she failed to cancel the transfer within seventy-two hours.
Then Dominic’s attorney arrived with the land authorization.
Dominic placed a pen beside Clara’s hand.
“Sign it.”
“I need my own lawyer to review it.”
“You have a husband.”
“That isn’t the same thing.”
His jaw tightened.
“The town needs this project.”
“The town needs clean water.”
The words made him freeze.
Clara realized she had said too much.
Dominic leaned closer.
“What do you know about the water?”
“Nothing.”
He studied her face.
That evening, he canceled her car service and instructed the gate guards not to let her leave alone.
Clara’s scheduled email would be sent the next afternoon.
She only needed to avoid alerting him until then.
But Dominic entered the nursery before sunrise carrying her old tablet.
On its screen was the hidden folder containing every photograph and payment record.
“You’ve been building a case against me,” he said.
Clara backed toward the crib.
“No. I’ve been protecting myself.”

Dominic locked the nursery door.
👉 The evidence Clara gathered to save herself had convinced Dominic that he could no longer afford to let her leave the estate.
