Chapter 3 - THE MAN WHO ARRIVED WITH FLOWERS
Three years earlier, Dominic Mercer had entered Clara’s life carrying white roses.
They met at a charity auction held inside the restored town courthouse.
Dominic was thirty-six, polished, wealthy, and already treated like royalty throughout Bellweather County.
His family owned construction companies, hotels, and half the commercial property surrounding the town square.
Police officers opened doors for him.
Council members returned his calls within minutes.
When Dominic donated fifty thousand dollars to the children’s hospital, the mayor praised him from the stage.
Clara knew his reputation.
She did not know him.
After the auction, he found her standing alone beneath a portrait of her late father, Thomas Hale.
“Your father saved this building,” Dominic said.
Thomas had led the legal campaign that prevented the courthouse from being demolished.
Clara smiled.
“Most people remember him as the attorney who stopped their development projects.”
“I remember him as a man who wasn’t afraid to stand alone.”
Dominic spoke with admiration.
He listened when Clara talked.
He remembered her favorite coffee.
He sent flowers to Victoria’s house the next morning with a handwritten note thanking them both for their family’s service to the town.
Victoria remained cautious.
“He researches people before he meets them,” she told Clara.
“Successful businessmen do that.”
“Men seeking leverage do it too.”
Clara accused her mother of judging Dominic because his father had once fought Thomas over a land dispute.
Victoria said the old conflict was not the reason she distrusted him.
“Then what is?”
Victoria did not answer.
At the time, she had no proof—only sealed financial reports and an anonymous complaint linking Dominic’s companies to illegal police payments.
She was bound by federal confidentiality.
Dominic used her silence against her.
“Your mother will never accept anyone she can’t control,” he told Clara.
He never demanded that Clara distance herself from Victoria.
He simply created small wounds between them.
He made private jokes about Victoria’s distrust.
He canceled dinners at the last moment, then claimed Victoria had changed the time.
He told Clara that her mother had questioned whether she was emotionally mature enough to marry.
None of it was true.
But Clara believed the man who spoke gently while holding her hand.
Ten months after they met, Dominic proposed beside the courthouse fountain.
A uniformed police honor guard happened to be standing nearby for another event.
When they applauded, Clara mistook their obedience to Dominic for respect.
Victoria attended the wedding.
During the reception, Dominic whispered to her near the staircase.
“You lost the fight over the river property years ago.”
Victoria looked at him.
“I wasn’t aware we were fighting.”
Dominic smiled.
