Chapter 12 - THE NIGHT THOMAS DIED
Pike’s confession lasted four hours.
Nine years earlier, Thomas Hale had contacted him privately.
Pike was a young officer with gambling debts and a newborn son.
Thomas believed he could persuade him to testify about Mercer Construction’s illegal dumping.
Pike agreed to meet.
But before Thomas arrived, Dominic’s father offered Pike enough money to erase his debts.
Pike chose the money.
He told the Mercers where Thomas would be driving.
A construction truck followed Thomas onto the mountain road.
Its driver forced Thomas’s car toward the guardrail.
The original plan was to frighten him into surrendering the evidence.
Instead, Thomas lost control.
The car went over the embankment.
Pike arrived first.
Thomas was still alive.
He asked Pike to call Victoria.
Pike called Dominic’s father instead.
By the time paramedics were dispatched, Thomas had stopped breathing.
Pike removed documents from the vehicle and rewrote the report.
For nine years, the Mercer family paid him to remain silent.
Dominic learned the truth after taking control of the company.
He did not report it.
He used it.
When Pike threatened to confess, Dominic increased the payments and promoted officers loyal to him.
Then Dominic discovered Thomas’s trust.
Marrying Clara offered three advantages.
He could control the preserve.
He could prevent her from reopening her father’s investigation.
And he could monitor Victoria.
Clara listened to the confession from a secure federal room.
Her face remained still until the recording ended.
Then she removed her wedding ring.
She placed it on the table.
Victoria sat beside her.
“I should have told you I suspected murder.”
“You were trying to protect me.”
“I also wanted to protect myself from watching you hurt.”
Clara looked at her mother.
“We both stayed silent because we thought silence would keep the other one safe.”
Victoria nodded.
“And Dominic built his power inside that silence.”
Pike agreed to testify against Dominic and the remaining officers.
But Dominic’s attorney attacked the confession as the lie of a corrupt policeman desperate to reduce his sentence.
To prove Dominic’s knowledge, investigators needed a direct admission.
Clara knew how to obtain one.
She requested a monitored meeting with her husband.
Victoria refused immediately.
“He has already hurt you.”
“That’s why he’ll believe I’m afraid enough to bargain.”
Clara placed a protective hand over her belly.
“He married me because he thought I would never face him.”
