Chapter 4 - THE PROPERTY NO ONE COULD BUY
The Hale River Preserve covered eight hundred acres outside town.
Clara’s father had inherited the land from his grandmother. He later placed it in a protected family trust to prevent commercial development.
The property contained wetlands, forests, and the underground reservoir supplying drinking water to three neighboring communities.
Dominic’s father had tried to purchase it twenty years earlier.
Thomas refused.
When money failed, the Mercer family supported a county proposal to seize the property through eminent domain.
Thomas challenged the plan and won.
Six months later, Dominic’s father’s construction company was investigated for illegally burying industrial waste near the preserve.
The case collapsed after evidence disappeared from the police property room.
No one was charged.
Thomas continued investigating privately.
Then his car went through a guardrail on a mountain road.
The official report blamed rain and excessive speed.
Victoria never believed it.
Thomas was a cautious driver.
The weather had been clear.
The police photographs showed damage inconsistent with the report, but the original images vanished before Victoria could obtain copies.
Clara was nineteen and devastated.
Victoria decided not to burden her with suspicions she could not prove.
That choice created a silence Dominic later exploited.
Under Thomas’s trust, Clara would gain full control of the preserve when she turned thirty or became a parent.
Her thirtieth birthday was sixteen months away.
Her pregnancy moved the transfer forward.
Once her child was born, Clara alone could approve conservation agreements, easements, or a sale.
Dominic knew this before he proposed.
He waited until their first wedding anniversary to mention the property.
“My company could build an environmentally responsible community there,” he said.
“It’s protected.”
“Protections can be amended.”
“My father created the trust so it would never be developed.”
“Your father was fighting an old war.”
Clara refused.
Dominic did not argue.
The next morning, he brought her breakfast in bed.
A week later, he asked again.
Then his attorney prepared a “temporary management authorization” allowing Dominic to negotiate on Clara’s behalf.
She refused to sign that too.
His patience began disappearing.
He criticized her clothing.
He monitored her phone.
He replaced the household staff with employees loyal to him.
When Clara tried to visit Victoria alone, the driver reported the trip to Dominic.
Still, he never struck her.
Not then.
He preferred quieter methods.
He made Clara question her memory.
He told friends she was overwhelmed.
He convinced the family doctor that pregnancy anxiety was affecting her judgment.
Then one evening, Clara found a survey map hidden inside Dominic’s office.
It showed drilling sites across the Hale River Preserve.
