Chapter 2 - THE HOUSE HE COULD NOT ENTER

“Mom.”

Clara’s voice was barely audible.

Victoria dropped the folder and caught her before she fell.

The physician rushed from the hallway, followed by two federal medics. They lowered Clara onto a stretcher and checked the baby’s heartbeat.

“She’s contracting,” the physician said. “We need to move.”

Dominic stepped toward the door.

“I’m her husband.”

A federal agent blocked him.

“You will remain outside.”

“I have the legal right to be with my wife.”

Clara gripped Victoria’s wrist.

“Don’t let him near me.”

The fear in her voice was enough.

The agent instructed Dominic to step back.

Officer Grant tried to intervene.

“This is a local domestic matter.”

The lead federal agent turned toward him.

“Officer Benjamin Grant, you are under arrest for obstruction of justice, bribery, and conspiracy to falsify police reports.”

Grant’s face collapsed.

Dominic looked at him sharply.

“Don’t say anything.”

That order was captured by three federal body cameras.

As Clara was carried into the ambulance, Dominic called after her.

“You’re confused! Your mother is using you!”

Clara did not look back.

At the hospital, doctors stopped the contractions. The baby remained stable, but Clara had two cracked ribs, a sprained wrist, and bruises at different stages of healing.

Victoria stood beside the examination table while a forensic nurse documented every injury.

“How long?” Victoria asked.

Clara stared at the ceiling.

“The first time was after the election fundraiser.”

“That was four months ago.”

“He apologized.”

“And the next time?”

Clara began to cry.

“He said I made him angry in front of the police chief.”

Victoria closed her eyes.

For six months, she had investigated Dominic’s business empire, his political donations, and the officers who protected him.

But she had never known what was happening inside her daughter’s marriage.

Clara had hidden every bruise beneath long sleeves and carefully applied makeup.

Dominic had told her that reporting him would only humiliate her.

He had also told her that Victoria would use the abuse to prove she had been right about him all along.

“He made me believe you would blame me,” Clara whispered.

Victoria took her hand.

“I blame the man who hurt you.”

A federal investigator entered carrying a waterproof evidence bag.

Inside was Clara’s torn purse, recovered from the road between Dominic’s estate and Victoria’s home.

The investigator removed a small digital recorder.

“It was still running when we found it.”

Clara’s expression changed.

She remembered pressing the button while Dominic was shouting at her.

The recording contained more than the assault.

Dominic had mentioned payments, police officers, and something hidden beneath the old courthouse.

Victoria looked at the investigator.

“Play the final minute.”

Dominic’s voice filled the hospital room.

“You should have signed the land transfer when I asked. Your father died protecting that property, and you’ll lose it the same way.”

Clara stopped breathing.

Her father had supposedly died in a car accident nine years earlier.

Victoria had never told her there was anything suspicious about his death.

👉 Dominic’s threat revealed that Clara’s abuse, her marriage, and her father’s death might all be connected to the same piece of land.
