Chapter 9 - MEGAN’S BOX OF RECEIPTS
Megan arrived at Emma’s house two days later.
She remained on the porch until Emma invited her inside.
She carried a cardboard box filled with receipts, bank statements, and printed messages.
“I didn’t know about the forged accounts,” she said.
Emma did not respond.
Megan placed the box on the table.
“Mom told me Dad left money for all of us. She said you didn’t need your part because Caleb had military benefits.”
“And you believed her?”
“I wanted to.”
Megan admitted Diane had paid her rent for nearly three years.
She had purchased the SUV.
She had covered private-school tuition for one child and expensive sports programs for another.
The phones were already paid for.
“Why did she tell me to send two thousand dollars?”
Megan looked ashamed.
“The credit line payment failed. Mom said if you made one payment from your bank, the lender would stop questioning whose account it was.”
Emma felt sick.
Megan had known the purpose of the payment.
“You knew she wanted to make the debt look like mine.”
“I didn’t understand everything.”
“You understood enough to call me selfish.”
Megan lowered her eyes.
“I’m sorry.”
Caleb carried Hazel into the other room, giving the sisters privacy.
Megan produced her phone.
Diane’s messages remained stored.
One said:
Emma always gives in after she cries. Caleb being away makes this easier.
Another read:
Once she pays, the bank can’t claim she didn’t know.
A third message concerned the house key.
I will go over there if she keeps ignoring me. She is too tired to fight.
Megan began crying.
“She used me too.”
Emma’s voice remained quiet.
“She favored you. That is not the same as using you.”
Megan accepted the correction.
She agreed to cooperate with investigators and provide every financial record she possessed.
Inside the box, Rachel found checks drawn from the Daniel Carter Family Trust.
The checks were signed by Diane.
The amounts totaled more than $180,000.
None had been paid to Emma.
At the bottom of the box was an old letter Megan had never opened.
It was addressed to both sisters in Daniel’s handwriting.
Diane had given it to Megan with instructions to store it but never read it.
The seal remained intact.
Emma reached for it.
Rachel stopped her gently.
