Chapter 4 - THE ACCOUNT EMMA NEVER OPENED

Emma called the lender while Hazel slept in a bassinet beside her.
The representative asked for the account number.
“I don’t have one. I’ve never opened an account with you.”
After verifying Emma’s identity, the woman became cautious.
The account was an unsecured family line of credit opened eighteen months earlier.
The original limit had been $25,000.
It had since increased to $40,000.
The current balance was $38,617.
Emma stopped breathing.
“That isn’t mine.”
The representative explained that the application had been submitted online using Emma’s Social Security number, date of birth, former address, and electronic signature.
Statements had been mailed to Diane’s home for the first year.
The mailing address was changed to Emma’s house two months before Hazel’s birth.
“Who made the payments?”
“Most were made from an account ending in 4419.”
Emma recognized the last four digits.
It belonged to Diane.
The most recent payment had failed.
The lender was demanding $2,000 to prevent the account from entering default.
Emma looked at Diane’s messages again.
SEND $2,000 TONIGHT.
The phones had been an excuse.
Diane needed Emma to make the overdue payment.
“Please freeze the account,” Emma said.
The representative transferred her to the fraud department.
They requested a police report and identity-theft affidavit.
Emma’s hands shook as she wrote down the instructions.
Then Diane called.
Emma answered this time.
“Did you open a credit account using my information?”
Silence.
Then Diane laughed.
“You are exhausted. You don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“The balance is almost thirty-nine thousand dollars.”
“That account helped this family.”
“So you did open it.”
“You have excellent credit because I taught you to be responsible.”
“You stole my identity.”
“Don’t use dramatic language.”
Emma heard a car door close in the background.
“Where are you?”
“I’m coming over.”
“No. Do not come here.”
“We need to speak face-to-face.”
“You are not allowed inside my house.”
Diane’s tone hardened.
“Caleb is far away. Stop pretending you can give orders now.”
Emma ended the call.
She contacted Caleb and told him everything.
He immediately called the military family-support office.
He asked Emma to lock the doors, activate the camera, and keep her phone recording.
Then he said something she had never heard him say before.
“Your mother is dangerous when she thinks she is losing control.”
Emma looked toward Hazel.

Outside, a car slowed near the house.
👉 Diane had spent years relying on Emma’s obedience, but this time she was arriving with a hidden key and a deadline from the bank.
