Chapter 5 - THE FAMILY TURNED AGAINST HER
Before Diane reached the house, she began calling relatives.
Emma’s phone filled with messages.
Aunt Linda wrote:
Your mother says you are accusing her of theft after everything she sacrificed.
A cousin asked why Emma was refusing to help Megan’s children.
Megan called three times.
Emma finally answered.
“What did Mom tell you?”
“That you promised to pay for the kids’ phones and suddenly changed your mind.”
“I never promised that.”
Megan became quiet.
“She said the money was coming from Dad’s family account.”
“What family account?”
“The account he left for all of us.”
Emma sat down slowly.
“Mom told me Dad left nothing.”
Megan sounded confused.
“She always said there was a family fund. That’s how she helped with my rent and the kids.”
“How much has she given you?”
“I don’t know. Over the years? A lot.”
Emma’s stomach tightened.
“Did you know she opened credit in my name?”
“No.”
“Did she tell you the two thousand dollars was for phones?”
“Yes.”
“The bank says it is the overdue payment on a fraudulent loan.”
Megan stopped speaking.
Emma could hear children in the background.
Then Megan whispered, “She bought the phones last month.”
The demand had never been about the phones.
Diane needed the payment to stop the lender from investigating.
More importantly, if Emma made the payment from her own bank account, Diane could later claim that Emma knew about the debt and accepted responsibility for it.
“Please send me every message Mom sent you about this account,” Emma said.
“I don’t want to get involved.”
“You already are.”
Megan ended the call.
Minutes later, Diane texted Emma.
Stop poisoning your sister against me.
Emma had not told Diane about the conversation.
That meant Megan had called her immediately.
Caleb contacted Emma again from the family-support office.
An officer named Captain Laura Hayes joined the call.
She helped Emma create an emergency plan.
Police had been notified that Diane might attempt to enter.
A locksmith was being dispatched.
“Do not argue with her,” Captain Hayes said. “Keep distance between her and the baby.”
Emma placed Hazel in a carrier against her chest.
Then the doorbell camera alerted.
Diane was standing on the porch.
She did not knock.
