Chapter 7 - EVERY VISIT WAS RECORDED
The locksmith changed every exterior lock.
Police remained until Diane left the property.
She was warned that returning could result in arrest.
Emma watched from the window as her mother drove away.
Only after the car disappeared did her knees give out.
She sat on the sofa, holding Hazel and crying silently.
Caleb stayed on the video call.
“I’m coming home,” he said.
“You can’t leave training.”
“Captain Hayes is working on emergency leave.”
Emma looked around the living room.
It no longer felt safe.
The door Diane had opened so casually seemed like a wound in the wall.
That evening, an officer reviewed the doorbell-camera archive.
Diane had visited twelve times in the previous four months.
On six occasions, no one was home.
She entered with the spare key and left carrying envelopes.
Once, she brought a small portable scanner.
Another recording showed her photographing documents through Emma’s dining-room window before going inside.
The most disturbing clip had been captured two weeks before Hazel’s birth.
Diane entered carrying an empty tote bag.
She left twenty-eight minutes later with the bag full.
Emma searched the house.
Tax documents were missing.
So were copies of Caleb’s military pay statements, Emma’s passport information, and a folder containing her employment records.
Police added suspected mail theft and document theft to the report.
The next morning, Emma applied for a temporary protective order.
Diane responded online.
She posted that Emma was suffering from postpartum confusion and being manipulated by a controlling husband.
Relatives began sharing the statement.
One wrote:
A mother should not call the police on the woman who raised her.
Emma almost deleted her social-media accounts.
Then Caleb said, “Do not spend your strength defending yourself to people who have already chosen not to listen.”
Captain Hayes connected Emma with a military family attorney named Rachel Monroe.
Rachel reviewed the camera footage, text messages, and lender documents.
“This is not a family disagreement,” she said. “It is identity theft, financial fraud, coercion, and unauthorized entry.”
Rachel instructed Emma to freeze all three credit reports.
The results arrived within hours.
The fraudulent line of credit was not the only account.
There were two credit cards, a personal loan, and a vehicle lease Emma had never authorized.
