Chapter 8 - CALEB CAME HOME
Caleb arrived the following evening.
Emma was waiting near the window with Hazel in her arms.
When she saw his rental car, she began crying before he reached the porch.
Caleb entered using the new key.
He did not ask questions.
He held Emma and Hazel together.
For the first time since giving birth, Emma allowed herself to collapse against someone else.
“I should have seen it,” she whispered.
“You were taught that mistrusting your mother made you disloyal.”
“I kept giving her chances.”
“That is not permission to steal from you.”
Caleb slept on the sofa that night so Emma could rest while he cared for Hazel.
Every two hours, he brought the baby to her for feeding.
He changed diapers.
He washed bottles.
He answered calls from investigators.
Diane had always claimed Caleb isolated Emma.
His return made the lie impossible to believe.
He did not order Emma to cut contact.
He told her every decision was hers.
The following morning, Rachel spread the credit reports across the kitchen table.
The oldest fraudulent account had been opened four years earlier, shortly after Emma married Caleb.
The vehicle lease paid for Megan’s SUV.
One credit card financed Diane’s kitchen renovation.
Another included charges from vacations, electronics stores, restaurants, and children’s clothing.
The personal loan had paid off part of Diane’s mortgage.
“Why use my identity?” Emma asked.
“Your credit was stronger,” Rachel said. “And because you consistently sent your mother money, she may have believed she could describe these debts as family arrangements.”
Rachel requested the original applications.
Each contained an electronic signature resembling Emma’s.
Several listed Diane’s phone number for verification.
One used an email address created from Emma’s maiden name.
The recovery email belonged to Diane.
Then Caleb noticed something.
The earliest application listed the source of repayment as income from the “Daniel Carter Family Trust.”
Emma stared at the words.
“My father did not leave a trust.”
Rachel looked at her carefully.
“Are you certain?”
“My mother said his medical bills consumed everything.”
“Your sister mentioned a family fund.”
Rachel searched county probate records.
Daniel’s estate appeared unusually small.
But another record referenced a private trust administered outside probate.
Diane had been named temporary trustee.
The trust had never filed a final distribution notice.
Rachel closed her laptop.
