Chapter 6 - THE BANK CLOSED AT FIVE
Diane entered as though the house belonged to her.
She left the front door open and marched into the living room.
“What is wrong with you?”
Hazel woke crying.
Emma backed toward the sofa.
“Lower your voice.”
“You have embarrassed me in front of the entire family.”
“You opened a loan using my identity.”
“I used your credit to help people you claim to love.”
“You owe almost thirty-nine thousand dollars.”
“We owe it.”
“No. You owe it.”
Diane pointed at Hazel.
“You suddenly have a baby and think nobody else matters.”
“Leave my daughter out of this.”
“Send the two thousand before five o’clock, and this ends.”
Emma glanced at the time.
4:41 p.m.
“The bank closes at five,” Diane continued. “Make the payment, and no one needs to know you caused this.”
That sentence mattered.
Diane was not merely asking Emma to cover a debt.
She wanted Emma to create evidence that the account belonged to her.
Emma pressed the recording button on her phone.
“Say it again.”
Diane noticed the screen.
She stepped forward.
“Give me that.”
Emma turned away, shielding Hazel.
Diane grabbed Emma’s wrist.
The baby screamed.
Emma pulled free.
Hundreds of miles away, Caleb and Captain Hayes heard everything through the camera feed.
“Get someone to that house,” Caleb ordered.
Local officers were already approaching.
Diane looked toward the doorbell camera.
Her voice became quieter.
“Your husband cannot protect you from that base.”
“He doesn’t need to.”
“What is that supposed to mean?”
“It means I finally believe what he has been telling me.”
Diane reached for Emma’s phone again.
The doorbell rang.
Police officers entered.
A locksmith stood behind them.
Emma looked at the spare key still in the lock.
“You don’t have a key anymore.”
An officer escorted Diane away from Emma.
Diane insisted she had permission to enter.
Emma showed them the written message revoking access.
Then an envelope slipped from Diane’s purse.
It was addressed to Emma.
Inside was the lender’s final delinquency notice.
The officer asked why Diane possessed it.
Diane refused to answer.
At 4:57 p.m., the lender froze the account for suspected identity theft.
Diane’s deadline passed.
