Chapter 13 - THE STORY DIANE TOLD EVERYONE
Diane’s arrest divided the family.
Some relatives believed Emma immediately.
Others insisted financial matters should have remained private.
Aunt Linda called Caleb.
“You are destroying a mother and daughter over paperwork.”
Caleb replied, “She stole ninety-six thousand dollars using Emma’s identity.”
“She raised Emma.”
“That does not give her ownership of Emma’s name.”
Diane’s attorney released a statement portraying her as a grandmother who had informally managed family finances for years.
The fraudulent accounts were described as shared obligations.
The forced entry became an unfortunate misunderstanding.
Emma was called emotionally vulnerable after childbirth.
Rachel advised Emma not to argue online.
Instead, they preserved evidence.
The doorbell company certified the footage.
The lender confirmed Emma had never participated in the account application.
A handwriting specialist found that Diane had traced Emma’s signature from old tax documents.
Bank records proved every payment before the final default came from Diane.
Caleb’s military records verified that he had no knowledge of the loans.
Megan gave investigators her messages.
One conversation was especially damaging.
Megan had asked what would happen if Emma refused to pay.
Diane answered:
She won’t. She still wants me to love her.
Emma read the message alone.
Of all the evidence, that sentence hurt most.
Diane had understood exactly what Emma wanted.
Not money.
Not approval from relatives.
A mother who loved her without demanding payment.
And Diane had used that longing as leverage.
At the preliminary hearing, Megan testified.
She admitted she accepted money without asking where it came from.
She admitted repeating Diane’s accusations.
She also told the court she had never heard Emma authorize a loan or surrender her inheritance.
Diane stared at Megan with open hatred.
“You chose her,” she whispered as Megan passed.
Megan stopped.
“No. I finally stopped choosing what was easiest.”
The judge ruled that the case would proceed to trial.
Diane remained out on secured bond but wore an electronic monitor.
She was required to surrender her passport.
The trust assets and childhood home were frozen.
Then Rachel received a call from the prosecutor.
A deleted audio file had been recovered from Diane’s phone.
It was recorded the night before the confrontation.
Diane had been rehearsing what she planned to say to Emma.
