Chapter 8 - THE GUARDIANSHIP PETITION
The petition described Valerie as confused, paranoid, and financially reckless.
It claimed she had accused family members of stealing without evidence.
It claimed she had threatened to destroy Mercer Urban Holdings.
Adrian wrote that the fall occurred after Valerie became agitated and refused medical advice.
Robert stated his daughter had “never understood the pressures of executive leadership.”
Elaine wrote that Valerie’s marriage had become unstable because she was “unwilling to control her emotions.”
Mara read each statement aloud.
Valerie stared at the ceiling.
The insults were familiar.
Emotional.
Difficult.
Ungrateful.
Now they had become legal tools.
If the court approved temporary guardianship, Adrian could control Valerie’s medical decisions, trust distributions, and voting rights.
He could complete North River before she recovered enough to testify.
Mara called the hospital’s patient advocate and requested an independent capacity evaluation.
A neurologist examined Valerie.
He asked her name, date, location, and why she had been admitted.
Valerie answered slowly but correctly.
He asked what would happen if she revoked the mortgage guarantee.
“My parents lose the refinance.”
“Do you understand the financial consequence?”
“Yes.”
“Why are you choosing it?”
“Because they supported the man who injured me and used my signature without consent.”
The doctor documented that she possessed full decision-making capacity.
Adrian’s attorney attempted to enter the ICU with the emergency petition.
Hospital security stopped him.
Mara filed an immediate opposition containing the audio recording, medical assessment, photographs, and forged documents.
The judge suspended the guardianship request until a full hearing.
Adrian lost his fastest path.
Then the bank sent another notice.
Without Valerie’s guarantee, Robert and Elaine needed to provide five million dollars in additional collateral within seventy-two hours.
Robert called Mara.
“This is elder financial abuse.”
Mara almost laughed.
“Valerie withdrew from a transaction that had not closed.”
“She promised to help us.”
“She promised before you signed a false guardianship statement.”
Elaine arrived at the hospital carrying flowers.
Security refused entry.
She stood outside the glass and held up a handwritten note.
WE MADE A MISTAKE. LET US EXPLAIN.
Valerie looked at her mother.
Elaine pressed one hand against the window.
For a moment, Valerie remembered childhood fevers and bedtime stories.
Then she remembered the message sent while she lay unconscious.
Go home and fix your marriage.
Valerie turned away.
Mara opened the North River folder.
A hidden appendix showed the acquisition company was owned partly by Adrian.
