Chapter 7 - THE FIRST NIGHT AWAKE
Valerie could not remember the ambulance.
She remembered the stairs.
Adrian’s hand.
Her mother’s voice asking about evidence.
Then cold light.
Machines.
Mara sitting beside the bed.
“You’re safe,” Mara said.
Valerie tried to speak.
Pain tightened across her ribs.
“Adrian?”
“Outside. Security will not let him enter.”
“My parents?”
“They left.”
Valerie closed her eyes.
That hurt differently.
Adrian’s violence shocked her.
Her parents’ abandonment confirmed something she had resisted her entire life.
They did not love her more than they needed her.
Mara explained the immediate situation.
North River required a board vote within hours.
Adrian had activated the forged proxy.
Robert and Elaine were supporting him.
The mansion refinancing would close the next morning if Valerie’s guarantee remained active.
The life-insurance policy remained in force.
The company still listed Adrian as authorized user on her tax and trust files.
Valerie lifted one hand toward the tablet.
“Stop them.”
Mara needed clear instructions for each document.
The nurse adjusted Valerie’s oxygen.
“You can rest first.”
“No.”
The word barely escaped.
Valerie looked through the glass.
Adrian was shouting at security.
He believed marriage gave him a right to enter.
Her parents were calling repeatedly.
They believed blood gave them a right to her signature.
Valerie chose the mortgage guarantee first.
Not because it was the largest document.
Because it was the clearest.
Her parents had watched Adrian leave her injured on the floor.
They would not use her credit to keep their ballroom.
Mara submitted the withdrawal.
The lender canceled the refinancing.
Robert called within seconds.
Valerie watched his name vibrate across the hospital phone.
She did not answer.
Mara opened the corporate proxy.
“This signature is forged, but formally suspending it may trigger a board fight.”
“Good.”
The next file contained Adrian’s authorization to access her trust records.
“Revoke it.”
The tax authorization.
“Revoke it.”
The medical power of attorney.
“Revoke it.”
The life-insurance consent.
“Challenge it.”
Each instruction weakened her voice.
None weakened her resolve.
Then Mara opened a file neither woman had seen before.
It was a petition requesting temporary guardianship over Valerie.
Adrian claimed she had suffered a psychological crisis before the fall.
Robert and Elaine had signed as supporting witnesses.
