Chapter 12 - ROSA’S RECORDING
Rosa Alvarez had worked in Valerie’s home for seven years.
Adrian treated her as invisible.
That mistake preserved the most important evidence.
After calling 911, Rosa placed her phone inside her apron pocket and continued recording.
The audio captured Adrian returning to the staircase.
He found Valerie unconscious.
Instead of checking her pulse, he searched her robe and the floor for her phone.
Robert arrived twelve minutes later.
Elaine came behind him.
Rosa remained inside the kitchen doorway.
Robert said, “If she sent the files, North River is finished.”
Adrian answered, “Mara may have them.”
Elaine asked, “Is Valerie breathing?”
Adrian said, “Yes.”
Then Robert replied:
“Good. We need her alive until the transfer clears.”
The ICU room became silent when Mara played the words.
Valerie turned toward the window.
She had believed the life-insurance policy meant her death would benefit them.
The recording revealed something colder.
They needed her alive temporarily.
The North River documents required her identity and voting rights.
After the transfer, the insurance policy made her more valuable dead.
Rosa’s audio continued.
Elaine suggested calling an ambulance.
Robert objected.
“If she wakes before the proxy is filed, she’ll revoke everything.”
Adrian said he could claim Valerie fell after drinking.
Then Rosa stepped into the hallway and announced she had already called 911.
Adrian threatened to fire her.
Rosa answered, “Fire me after the paramedics arrive.”
She had saved Valerie without knowing Mara would later save the recording.
Police used the audio to obtain additional warrants.
Adrian was arrested on charges including aggravated assault, unlawful restraint, evidence tampering, forgery, and financial conspiracy.
Robert and Elaine were arrested for conspiracy, fraud, and delaying medical care.
News vehicles surrounded the hospital.
Mercer Urban Holdings’ stock in a private employee fund temporarily froze.
Hundreds of workers feared they would lose their jobs.
Valerie asked Mara to bring her the company payroll report.
“You need rest,” the doctor said.
“I need to know whether employees are paid Friday.”
The company had enough cash for three weeks.
Valerie activated an emergency operating reserve her grandfather had created.
Payroll continued.
Health insurance remained active.
Projects stayed open.
Employees received a message from Valerie’s hospital bed.
No innocent worker will lose wages because executives stole from the company.
The message spread internally.
For the first time, employees learned Valerie was not a passive shareholder.
Then the audit team found one department Adrian had been funding secretly.
