Chapter 15 - THE WOMAN WAITING IN PORTUGAL
Camille West had served as Adrian’s strategy director for three years.
She attended meetings Valerie was told were confidential.
She controlled Adrian’s travel.
She also rented the apartment in Lisbon where he planned to live after North River closed.
Camille’s messages were careful at first.
VALERIE WILL NEVER APPROVE THE TRANSFER.
Adrian replied:
HER PARENTS WILL PRESSURE HER.
Later:
SHE MET WITH MARA. THE PROXY MAY NOT HOLD.
Camille answered:
THEN YOU NEED A MEDICAL EVENT BEFORE THE VOTE.
Adrian wrote:
I’M NOT KILLING MY WIFE.
Camille responded:
I SAID AN EVENT. PEOPLE FALL. PEOPLE BREAK DOWN. PEOPLE BECOME UNABLE TO SIGN.
The messages did not prove Camille ordered the assault.
They proved Adrian had considered incapacitating Valerie before it happened.
A later exchange was worse.
After Valerie fell, Adrian texted:
SHE’S BREATHING. ROSA CALLED 911.
Camille answered:
FILE THE PROXY NOW. IF SHE DIES LATER, THE POLICY CLEARS THE DEBT.
Camille was arrested while attempting to board a flight.
She agreed to cooperate.
She admitted creating the false psychological history and coordinating Dr. Hale’s opinion.
She helped copy Valerie’s signatures.
She also confirmed Robert and Elaine knew the North River transaction benefited them personally.
“Did they know Adrian might hurt Valerie?” the prosecutor asked.
“Robert knew Adrian intended to frighten her.”
“And Elaine?”
“She knew they were preparing guardianship before any accident occurred.”
Camille accepted a plea agreement.
Her testimony strengthened the charges against all three family members.
Adrian continued claiming Valerie attacked him first.
The house recording contradicted him.
The medical evidence contradicted him.
His own messages contradicted him.
Still, the case would require Valerie to testify.
Her doctors warned that court stress could slow neurological recovery.
Mara asked whether she wanted prosecutors to proceed without her.
“No.”
“You don’t owe the public your injuries.”
“I know.”
“You don’t owe Adrian another room where he can look at you.”
“I know that too.”
“Then why testify?”
Valerie looked toward the rehabilitation mirror.
One side of her face remained discolored.
Her left hand still trembled.
“Because they built every document around the idea that weakness makes consent unnecessary.”
She practiced walking without support.
Every step hurt.

👉 Adrian expected the jury to see an injured woman whose memory could be questioned, but Valerie planned to enter court carrying every signature he had tried to steal.
