Chapter 6 - THE FAMILY WHO CHOSE THE STORY

Paramedics arrived at 11:18 p.m.
Adrian met them at the door.
“My wife fell down the stairs.”
Rosa stood behind him shaking her head.
“She was already on the floor when I came in.”
Adrian interrupted.
“She has been drinking.”
There was no alcohol in Valerie’s system.
He claimed she had become emotionally unstable after discovering financial stress inside the family company.
At the hospital, Robert and Elaine arrived before surgery.
They did not enter Valerie’s room.
They met Adrian inside a private waiting area.
Rosa watched from the hallway.
She heard Robert say, “The company cannot survive a scandal.”
Elaine answered, “Valerie will understand when she wakes up.”
Adrian asked whether the North River vote could proceed while she remained unconscious.
Robert said the proxy would handle it.
Mara reached the hospital thirty minutes later.
She had received the automatic audio upload and the paramedic alert from Valerie’s emergency file.
When she entered the waiting area, all three fell silent.
“Where is Valerie’s phone?” Mara asked.
Adrian stood.
“This is a family matter.”
“She is my client.”
“She is my wife.”
Mara looked at Robert and Elaine.
“Did either of you ask the surgeon whether she would survive?”
Elaine began crying.
“We are all in shock.”
Mara did not comfort her.
She asked hospital security to restrict access until Valerie regained consciousness and could choose her visitors.
Adrian protested.
Robert threatened to call the hospital board.
Mara produced the recording.
Adrian’s voice filled the corridor.
YOU WILL NOT THREATEN MY COMPANY.
Then came the impact.
Valerie asking for an ambulance.
Robert’s voice asking whether evidence had been erased.
The security supervisor listened without expression.
“Mr. Cole, you need to leave this floor.”
Elaine grabbed Mara’s arm.
“You will destroy this family.”
Mara removed her hand.
“No. I arrived after your family made its decision.”
Valerie underwent emergency surgery for a skull fracture and internal bleeding.
Doctors placed her in intensive care.
Adrian told police the recording lacked context.
Robert said he had only meant financial documents.
Elaine insisted she believed Valerie had suffered a minor fall.
None of them returned to her bedside.
At 6:12 the next morning, Robert sent Valerie a message.
GO HOME AND FIX YOUR MARRIAGE. ADRIAN HAS ENOUGH PRESSURE.
She was still unconscious when it arrived.
At 8:03, Adrian submitted the corporate proxy.
At 8:15, he scheduled the North River vote.
