Chapter 5 - Her Father’s Warning

Victoria opened the envelope with shaking hands.

Inside was a single handwritten letter.

My dearest Victoria,

If Elias has given you this, then someone you love has begun asking for authority they have not earned. Do not confront them too soon. People who believe you are trapped will eventually reveal what they truly want.

Trust documents, not promises. Trust patterns, not apologies. Most importantly, remember the necklace your mother left you. It was built to preserve more than memories.

Love always, Dad.

Victoria read the final sentence again.

Her mother, Catherine, had died when Victoria was fourteen. The diamond necklace had been Catherine’s favorite piece of jewelry.

Edward kept it in the family vault until Victoria’s thirtieth birthday.

It looked ordinary: a teardrop diamond surrounded by tiny sapphires.

“What did he mean?” Victoria asked.

Elias shook his head.

“Edward never explained everything. He said you would understand when you needed to.”

Victoria took the necklace from the vault that afternoon.

The clasp felt heavier than she remembered.

Beneath the diamond was a nearly invisible metal seam.

Before she could investigate further, Damian arrived at Elias’s office.

His expression changed when he saw the necklace.

Only for a moment.

Then he smiled.

“I haven’t seen you wear that in years.”

“It belonged to my mother.”

“I know.”

Damian touched the pendant with one finger.

Victoria watched his face.

“Why are you here?”

“You missed lunch.”

He smiled at Elias, but there was no warmth in it.

That evening, Damian surprised Victoria with plans for a grand housewarming celebration at Vale House, the mansion Edward had been renovating before his death.

“It will prove you’re still strong,” he said. “Every investor who matters will be there.”

Serena supported the idea immediately.

Victoria looked down at her mother’s necklace.

For the first time, she wondered whether the party was meant to celebrate her return—or display her surrender.

👉 When Damian insisted that every powerful investor attend the housewarming, Victoria realized he needed witnesses for something he had not yet revealed.
