Chapter 14 - The Walk Down the Staircase
Music played in the ballroom as Victoria left the bedroom.
Damian followed several minutes later, believing she had gone downstairs to announce the transfer.
Serena stayed behind to fix her makeup.
Victoria paused at the top of the grand staircase.
More than two hundred people filled the hall below.
The chandeliers burned above golden tables. Cameras waited near the stage. Investors from three states occupied the front rows.
Mara’s voice reached Victoria through the hidden earpiece.
“The recording is secured.”
“Is the ballroom channel ready?”
“Yes.”
Elias stood near the VIP table, watching the staircase.
Victoria touched the necklace once.
That was their signal.
Elias looked toward the AV booth.
The housewarming host introduced Damian as Victoria’s future husband and “the man helping guide Vale Holdings into its next chapter.”
Applause followed.
Damian stepped onto the stage with a confident smile.
He raised a glass.
“To family, legacy and new beginnings.”
Victoria descended slowly in her red sequined gown.
Guests turned toward her.
Damian’s smile faltered when he noticed she was not crying.
Serena emerged at the top of the staircase wearing pink silk.
For a moment, all three stood in the same room beneath Edward Vale’s portrait.
The betrayed daughter.
The faithless fiancé.
The widow who had tried to steal from them both.
Damian extended his hand toward Victoria.
“Come stand with your family.”
Victoria reached the center aisle.
Then the ballroom lights dimmed.
The screen behind Damian flickered.
He turned.
The first image appeared.
It showed the master bedroom.
It showed Serena locking the door.
And it showed Damian placing the fraudulent documents in front of Victoria.
A gasp rolled through the room.
Damian dropped his glass.
On-screen, his recorded voice said:
May you like
“Sign them, or Serena and I will make sure everyone believes you’re mentally unfit to raise that baby.”
