Chapter 1 - The Ballroom Saw Everything
Two hundred guests watched Damian Cross betray his pregnant fiancée on a screen twenty feet tall.
The champagne glass slipped in Victoria Vale’s hand, but it did not fall.
Behind her, the enormous ballroom screen showed Damian inside the master bedroom, shirtless and furious, throwing legal papers across a table.
“Sign them,” the recorded Damian barked. “Or Serena and I will make sure everyone believes you’re mentally unfit to raise that baby.”
A horrified murmur swept through the gold-plated ballroom.
Investors rose from their chairs. Socialites lifted their phones. Members of the Vale Holdings board stared at the screen as though the walls had cracked open.
Then Serena appeared in the recording.
Victoria’s stepmother wore the same pink silk dress she was wearing at the party.
She wrapped her arms around Damian from behind and kissed his bare shoulder.
“Once the company is transferred,” Serena whispered, “she’ll have nothing left to fight us with.”
The real Damian came charging down the staircase, his shirt still unbuttoned.
“Turn it off!”
Serena collapsed near the dance floor, covering her face as cameras turned toward her.
Victoria stood in the center of the aisle in a red sequined gown, one hand protecting her unborn child.
With the other, she touched the diamond pendant resting against her chest.
A tiny red light blinked beneath the stone.
“You should’ve checked the necklace,” she said.
The recording continued.
On-screen, Damian shoved a pen into Victoria’s hand while Serena locked the bedroom door.
The family lawyer shot to his feet.
“Freeze that feed!”
Security guards entered from both sides of the ballroom.
Damian stopped moving.
Victoria slowly raised her untouched glass.
“Now the whole city knows.”
But what the guests had seen was only the surface of the betrayal.
